RM K | How to deal with demeaning boss? |
Boss just came and interrupted my work to demand I go make coffee. He is getting worse lately about demeaning requests of his female employees (not the guys, just the women). I work for a small company. For the most part, I like my job and the ppl I work with. Its close to home. I just would like to address this and stop it.
I have a Bachelors degree and am a CS manager, I think I should be treated with a little more respect than that!

First-with your qualifications how limited are you in your field,employment wise?Find another job-kick him in the nards; ever not so gently but with great discretion of course;then quit. If this is not to your liking then you could try talking to him(like that's going to work-since he has such a significant amount of respect for females already).Take your complaint over his head but if nothing happens-make notes of incidents,date,time,witnesses,get a lawyer and sue his ***.However if that is a lot of effort because it would be for me if I were you;then follow his example;make him look bad amongst his peers. However if such an opportunity doesn't present itself then blackmail the mofo.The ego of a man is a dangerous thing-makes them blind when stroked a little too much. You're a woman figure it out-my work is done. Clearly I've got way too much time on my hands and your question pulled me in. I'm couriosly intriguied as to what you'll do. What you need to do is to speak up.... let him know how it affects you, and you are not his caddy, it's that easy.
Confront him in a crowded room, so that your peers notice you rock.
Honestly, I don’t know what your circumstances are…. Allowing this kind of behavior to continue.

Do you have an HR department? If you do, go see them. If not, make really bad coffee. If you suspect discrimination, talk to your local government. There are laws against it. |

I agree with the really bad coffee idea. Make sure you take him a cup and offer to get more since you know he likes it sooo much. No really you should have just said to him that upon checking your job discription it didnt mention making coffee. If he insists then make the bad coffee!!!! |

I'd get your female employees together, which will be no mean feat in itself and as a group ask to speak to the boss about his demeaning behaviour.
List all your grievances in writing, making copies for everyone including him.
Document all the incidents, time place when , what happened.
Politely but firmly tell him slavery was eliminated in 1865 by Abraham Lincoln and that the ' girls' are in revolt.
If you don't have a hr department tell him that if this keeps up you will report him to your state office of employment standards and human rights department. And if he doesn't improve make good on the threat.
This is an older man I'm assuming , he'd better get with the times or he'll have no female employees left.
What is it lately with mysognistic men thinking they are entitled to have women waiting on them? This is North America in 21 st century we're not living in islamic states where the Taliban rules yet are we?

One suggestion is to drop or spill the coffeepot and then take your time cleaning it up. Its unlikely he'll ask you again when he realizes that he's paying your salary for an assistant that he could hire someone $5 an hour for. From a business standpoint, you may want to consciously see what kind of work there is in the company that he could get a high school student to do for a low wage that will make the kid very happy to have income and experience... filing jobs, errands, etc. If he's using 10 minutes of your time each day, smile and be glad you have a job you like that's close to home but if you find it's taking away from your work then it's time he sees how many other people make good money fetching and making coffee, emptying trash cans, and getting supplies from the supply room. Time is money and it doesn't sound like he's realized that. It's not so much a problem with getting a cup of coffee as what a waste of company money. Take your time getting coffee and ask for overtime to compensate that time and he'll soon see he's losing money with each simple task he asks of you and the others. |

try to corner him in a isolated room when no one is around, and really let him have it! that's what I've don...and its worked...he has so much respect for me now...he told me that he had trouble with his wife, so he was so mean to us! |
