pat c | How to go about being a sole trader? |
How to register a business for tax purposes (income/VAT), paying national insurance contributions, and filling in your own tax forms, via software such as quickbooks, basically I am looking for a short summary on how to get started |

Try The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) on line.
They will help you get started without falling into any hidden traps. |

start buy buying a new pair of shoes? (sorry couldn't resist)
You can see a registered CPA. They will know all the in's and out's for less cost than an attorney. The CPA can set it up for you. Plus you'll need this connection in the future for your taxes.
You don't say what state you're in but here in CA, the State Board of Equalization has a website that will give you the forms needed. If you are a Sole Proprietor, the Fed's don't necessarily have licenses that are needed since you will be paying taxes on your own SS #.
If you decide to become a Corp. then the rules change. The rules change once again when you become an "employer" and hire workers.
There is so much more to cover. Try www.SBA.gov they have complete business start up info.
Good Luck, you are going to need those new shoes, because by the time your done knocking on all the entities doors you'll have worn a pair out. And remember -perseverence. |

forget any loan companies or people telling you its simple- it aint.the best way you can go foreward in a sensible way is to go and see the small business manager at your local bank-they all have them- they will most likely give you a starter pack and try to get your business.talk to all the main branches and choose the one that fits your eye...good luck. |

not one answer above telling you what forms you need to get setup and registered with the Inland Revenue (IR).
visit www.hmrc.gov.uk and print off a form called CWF1, this is the form you need to fill out and send back to the IR in order to be registered as self employed. This will make sure you receive a tax return on the next 5th April. Also this should link you to a Direct Debit form in order to pay class 2 National Insurance at £2.20 a week.
Make sure you complete and send back these form within 3 months of starting your self employment otherwise they will fine you £100.
As for VAT registration, you only really need to be concerned with this is you think your yearly turnover (sales) is going to go over the registration threshold of £64000 from 01/04/07.
if not, then dont register. if you think you need to register, then go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and visit the VAT section, this allows you to do it online.
as for bookkeeping software, I would recommend Sage Line 50. simple and easy to use and probably the most popular software that accountants use. I would suggest you employ a local accounting firm to do your year end accounts and complete the tax return as there are other things that you can get tax relief on in order to reduce your tax bill at the end of the year. they may charge you around £500 depending on what part of the country you are in, but If you process your sales invoices, purchase invoices and bank transactions on sage, then there should be little for them to do as you can give them a back up of your data and your bill should be cheaper.
Also, you need to get a sales invoice templete drawn up. this can be done on word or excel, and should include your busness name, invoice number, invoice date, business contact details and description of services or product supplied along with the amount due and to who payment should be made to and when (i.e. within 30 days of invoice date)
some useful website :
www.sage.co.uk
www.hmrc.gov.uk
www.fsb.org.uk

hope this helps |

I started up as a sole trader 6 months ago in the UK. The best help I got was from or through Business Link. Its like a wizard to set up your business, tailored to you. (see link below). It tells you who you need to notify, what grants are available, what licences you need, premises, employing staff, links to FREE training courses...loads of stuff.
HMRC is also a good site. They also have courses to help with accounts and self assessment - FREE!
Don't pay for any training about setting up in business, there's loads of FREE courses. Good luck! |

Phone your local tax office - they were very helpful with me and booked me into a 1 day course which was free and I learned all I needed to know plus more!! and at least you know what they tell you is correct not from a third party. |
