How to handle an employee who gives no notice?
Any employee of mine abruptly quit today without any notice. How does one handle a siutation like this? I have cleary outlined what was expected and this employee was working out rather well. Do I play hard ball now or just leave it alone based on the no notice or explanation?

Say good-bye & count your blessings.

And when they use you as a reference, be certain to mention that they left without notice.

Tim
I did the same thing once. I felt bad but a better job came up. Sometimes people have personal reasons too. I would just be the better person and leave it alone. Just my opinion.

Well..if your place of employment is a 5 a dime job. That's only expected. I use to be a manager of a well respected Pizza shop here in my state. You always have someone quiting without notice. You have to plan ahead for this. Watch for the warning signs. Sometimes you get no warning. Sometimes you do. If your a mom and pop store. This can surely hurt the business. But that's part of it. Unfortunately. Fortunately I was a cool enough manager that people would try to transfer to my store. I got fed up with corporate and there constant negligence to my store. I quite after they wrote me up for increasing the sales of the store (becoming #1 store in my district) and stealing customers from other stores (in the same chain) for altering a few things to better meet the customers wants. I tried many of times to tell them and the owner that people liked it this way. That's why I was getting people from 4 different cities coming to my store. But they didn't like it. and wrote me up. So I quite.

if you dont have anything to hide.. and are left in a bad position.. take care of it.. if its not a big deal.. let it go

As far as I'm concerned, I gave notice the day I hired on.

Kevin
Just talk to the employee about it, but whats the point of playing hard ball he already quit so if your trying to figure out whats going on or u still want him to work then just talk to him about the situation calm and nicely.

Kathy
Hard ball how? Are you in an "at will" state? If you are, then you can't do anything. Why not just hire someone else? Find out if you can reference them as "not re-hirable" based on job abandonment.

Ask the employee for feedback. If it was someone you'd like to keep with you, maybe its something that can be handled quickly and easily. Otherwise, I'd just let it go.

They quit..they quit..not much you can do...but you can hold their check until the next scheduled pay day.

What's there to play hardball about? If they quit with no notice, then they won't be there for you to do anything to them anyway.

What's hardball? The only thing you can do is give this in a future job recommendation you might have to give for this person. You cannot under any circumstance (unless there was a contract) demand that someone work for you. And if they break a 'contract' the only thing you can do is go to court and get financial reimbursement. Enforced labor is slavery or indentured servitude....which is against the law.

In all my years of business not even the BEST employees have the decency to give you proper notice, not even enough time to train their replacement--they don't feel its their problem. I personally could not do that to someone and I don't know how the a-holes sleep at night, but , rest assured, mo matter how strong your contract is saying you have to have x-amount of notice, when they decide to leave, you are NOT they problem. SO my caution to you is always have a plan B, even if you think you have it made in the shade because they will stab you in the back til you bleed. Been there more times than I can count!
