Ant | How to motivate a staff to sell.? |
I work at a bank opening accounts, the tellers are required to make referrals and have their own goals. I hear them talking to customers all day, but never about opening an account. I dont have the opprotunity to talk and sell like they do, so i am struggling. there is a quarterly incentive for them, but its not that much to give them the kick they need. what should i do? Additional Details ok we have a lot of people to come in and simply cash their paychecks. also, they know they have goals and other branches and tellers are making theirs. |

Maybe, if you are the manager, you should come up with your own incentives for them if it is important to you. When I worked retail, we came up with different "games" for the staff to play to encourage them to do things. And then we offered prizes such as "free lunch", "discount off item", etc. for prizes. One such game we played..."Bingo". Each person received a different bingo card with the squares filled out with certain tasks that we wanted accomplished...for example, "sale of 5 items". You could make up squares to suit you. Say "referral to customer". Maybe if you walk the floor often enough, you can make it a rule that you "have to hear the referral" so that you can be sure they are actually doing it and you can mark it off on their card.
Anyway, you can make variations to this game or try another game to suit you and your business. I think it's fun as it gives employees a fun game to play while at work doing their job as well as gets them to compete for prizes.
Just be sure that no one "talks about the game" or marks their cards off or anything like that in front of customers as it is unprofessional and the customers don't appreciate being part of a "game" or the thought of being "sold to". |

I worked retail for a million years, we did everything from posting a daily tally on everyone and how much they sold to having contest and giving the winners paid lunches...it's hard to motivate people, some responded well to the attention they got by being top seller, others were motivated by the extra insintives......some just didn't respond to anything. Strange thing. |

1. Increase the incentive
2. Make sure the goals are weekly -quarterly goals are too far off and too abstract.
3. Go over their goals every week and see how many each one did. Remind them constantly that they need to reach their goals and they are not reaching them.
4. Have a weekly contest about who can make the most referrals. Take the winner to lunch. |

You could offer something like a $10 gift card for a gas station for the person with the most referrals each week, or take the person with the most out for lunch. If you make it more like a game than something they're being forced to do, they will be more likely to try. |

Well, wouldn't a customer of the bank already have an account?
How are they supposed to get someone to open an account when they already have one?
It's not easy to sell stuff - I know, I've tried and I sucked at it.
Expecting bank tellers to be salesmen is expecting too much, in my opinion.
Either you have the gift of salesmanship, or you don't

Print up a brightly colored reminder & include it in with their paycheck or other company mail. Maybe it will give them something to think about. The more you think about something, the closer you get to acting upon it. |

if they are talking to "customers" those "customers" probably already have accounts don't you think? Plus if there a lot of people waiting in line, you're going to piss off a lot more of the existing customers by slowing down the teller throughput than you will gain by making the teller ask everyone if they want to open any new accounts |

if they are talking to people at the counter then the people most likely have an account already. it is hard to sell someone something they already have. |
