Ask an attorney or doctor.........or a plumber.........they all have great answers.........I'm a contractor........I tell them to call and I will give them a quote............along with my card....... |

get money out of it - ask them what kind of compensation you will be receiving or tell them straight up how much you charge. |

hmmmm thats a tough one. are you friends with this person? did you already say you would do it?
what i would do is say "listen, i really like the company and think i could make a cool logo but if you think you could get someone else to do it for free then you should do that, because i feel bad but i would have to charge you for my time." |

I would give them a written estimate of the work they want done, then ask them to let you know when they've had a chance to look it over, if they want to proceed. THAT should be all they need to get the point. |

Politely suggest some price ideas... "I should be able to help you. I charge ___$ an hour." You run a business, not a charity. Don't be afraid to be clear that such a service is not free. |

tell them how much it will cost you have to keep business and friendship separate if you don't you will never make anything trying to be nice is great but some people can't take the hint if it was delivered by a brick don't forget they are going to make money off of your hard work |

u need to buy ur groceries and also pay back the loan u took from ur cousin i.e. me!! and hence fame can't do that, u'd require a famous cheque from the famous company.. |

First of all, be wary of larger companies that ask for free things, the usually are looking to rip you off in some way or form. I would design it but negotiate a potential price, if they move on to someone else, they may have been only looking for a free ride, and not to make you "famous" or at the very least try to be able to put your name on it? |

You need to think about your career goals and if doing this would help towards that end. It depends on where you are right now and where you want to be. The answer may be "I would love to do it for you but I am so busy right now but I know that James X is good and looking for work." or the answer could be "I have so much work that I can not consider doing free work, but since it's you, I could give you a discount." Negotiation can be like tennis. Bounce the ball back to them.
Consider doing it for a discounted price. You may not get any recognition directly from the logo but you can and should ask the company for a testimonial to show future paying customers. If you have a website, you can use the testimonial on the website and link to the companies website as an example of your work. You could also demand a hidden page on their website ie a page not linked from any other of their public pages , where the company states that you designed this logo. |
