Most electronic registers do, if you key the amount tendered in correctly... yes....

Most of them do.
But the secret is not to subtract.
Example: if the total is 15.75 and the customer
gives you a 20 dollar bill. Just start with the 15.75
and think of the different coins adding up to 20.00.
A quarter makes it 16 and four ones equals 20.00

Donald C
Yes but you should know how to count money. The simplest way is tell the customer how much the bill is, say for example that it is 12.37 and they give you a hundred.
12.37 3 cents =12.40
10 cents =12.50
50 cents =13.00
$2.00 15.00
$5.00 = 20.00
4 x 20 dollar bills = 80 which is a hundred but count out each bill so that you only give back the correct number of bills.

when you have reached 20 with the change, singles and 5's you say that is 20 then for each 20 you add it up like 20,40,60,80, 100. You would be amazed at the number of people that do not know how to count change and don't count it back to the customer.

Yes, just think of it like a big calculator! It will do all your sums for you!

Yes.

It depends on the type of cash register. Most new ones will display the amount of money that you have to give back as change. Some older ones will not, and if you're working at a little Mom & Pop type store, they might have a really old machine.

But, even though most machines show the proper change, you'll still have to figure it out in your head sometimes. For example, if a person gives you $5.00 for a $4.90 item, and the suddenly says, "Oh, wait! I have the 90 cents!" If you've already entered the amount of $5 into the register, instead of $5.90, you'll have to figure out in your head that you owe them $1 in change, instead of 10 cents. Same goes if you accidentally enter the wrong amount into the till (i.e.: the amount you entered is not the amount that the person actually gave you).

If the store has one that is upgraded it will. If not just use a calculator (to double check is what you can tell people). I worked for a lady I used to baby sit for that just opened a tiny business and got a cash register and it was very old fashioned so I had to use a calculator.
Either way, you'll get so used to what the change is that you won't always need the register to tell you.

Joe B.
No offense intended, but it's really sad that people can't figure out what change to give in their head. I'm not pointing the finger at you...it's like that all over.

Most modern cash registers do all the work for you. That's probably the problem. People have become too dependent on the machine figuring things out for them.
