How would I start a small business?
I have a good vision of what I want to do, which is open a hobby store or sports trading cards area in a Mall location, more specifically at the moment it be nothing more then a spot in the middle of the mall and not in one of the side stores. I do believe I can make good business seeing as theirs no competition in the area, although where do I start?

I have visited www.sba.com but havent seen anythign that assist me in starting out.

I would guess such a business would require at least $20,000.00 for starters, but I question where do i get the money to get started?

Where do I start?

There is a myriad of questions that need to be researched and answered before venturing into a new business. This includes such things as obtaining supplies of stock, complying with legal requirements, financing the business etc, etc.

Some business can be launched on just a dribble of dollars - that is, enough assured income to keep you solvent until your business can support you. These are usually service businesses: typing, dressmaking, an art service or ad agency, an online store, or almost anything that one or two people can run from a small office or even a room at home. Mail-order businesses are often started with as little as $400 to $1,000. Other types of small business need only a thousand or two to get off the ground. Even a manufacturing business can be started with $600 if it's in a basement and if it needs only hand tools or one machine. A little retail store can open its doors for not much more than the cost of its inventory and lease, plus utility deposits and the like.

As you figure your start-up costs, they may look small. But don't underestimate other needs. Ongoing costs like overhead, insurance, maybe a reserve to carry customers' charge accounts, and other expenses can grow burdensome. Many businesses go broke simply through under-capitalization.

Before you leave a full-time job and start your own business you should have enough capital or know where you can get it in order to cover your family and business expenses for at least six months and preferably a year. If you have to dip into the cash register for groceries, you're flirting with bankruptcy. Go over your bills or check stubs for the past couple of years. Add a cushion for unexpected medical expenses and car repairs. Increase the total by the anticipated inflation rate. If your existing resources equal this amount, and you know you needn't touch those resources for your business, then your family should be safe.

Do not be disheartened by all of this. Just remember that it can take a lot of time and energy to develop a successful and thriving business.

Good luck in your endeavours!

Start with a basic plan and the right infrastructure - go to www.rebatetech.com for cashback discounts on online small business tools and good articles.

Keep your costs low.

Figure out your start up costs based on 6 months of operating capital (rent, utilities, salaries) + inventory costs. Then develop a marketing plan. Use coupons after each purchase to develop repeat customers (next purchase X% off).

If you ask for a bank loan then research competitors in the area or the nearest one so you can develop your 1 year income statement based on a similar business. Good luck.

SBA is definitely a good place to start. I would encourage you to put a business plan together, because SBA is going to request one as well as any Bank you may use. Good thing about is you should be able to figure your cash flow which will definitely tell you what you need to sell on a monthly basis to survive. You may also want to explore going with an online business first. Good Luck. Here is a good product that can get you started: http://www.topbusinessopportunitiesreviewed.com/reviews/Biz_StartUps/Creating_a_Business_Plan.html

You first need to write a business plan, you can find loads of business plan examples and templates all over the internet. After completing your business plan you can approach banks for investment/funding/loans. But I would suggest you lower your start-up costs to more in the region of $5000. You will need to do alot of research to be able to prove in your business plan that you can actually make a profit whilst still being able to repay your start-up loan.

You would need a permit to trade within the mall area.
You will need to register your business and make sure your business name does not conflict with other local businesses. If you will be starting as a sole trader you can't use words like limited, international, global, within your name.

Depending on your age, you may find support from local organisations setup to help young people start-up in business, they will be able to provide free advice on VAT/TAX issues, sourcing finance, registration processes etc.

Again, I strongly recommend you spend alot of time writing your business plan and do alot of research. This will form the basis of your business and will be your only tool to use when approaching banks. Find out about competition and suppliers, potiential customers, how much can you buy and sell for, how much would it cost for premises/stall. Work out all your fixed costs, variable costs and then you will be able to calculate how many units you will need to sell per month in order to breakeven. These are all things that you should include in your business plan. If you approach the banks with any information missing from your business plan they wont even consider any financial agreements.

Hope this helps. I have alot of experience in UK business start-ups, but I have tried to anwser from a US perspective.

Good-luck!

Don't start a business that requires any spelling. Read the book "Growing a Business" by Hawken, "Think and Grow Rich". That's what helped me, and I've had a small business for 20 years.

start with the sba by using the help you can get from start organization. start is an organization of retired businessmen and owners who help individuals get started. it may be called score. you can call the local chamber of commerce for a referral to the organization.

Well having pondered starting a SB this question caught my eye. Obviously as I am not a SB owner I am not an expert but I would imagine finding out what each Mall would charge for space and if any is available would be a good place to start. Also, unless you are using your own money you would probably want to write a Business Plan so when you go to the Bank for a loan you sound like a professional person. Other than that whatever your merchandise is going to cost you would have to factor in. Sometimes people start off small with just doing Flea Markets but again I don't know all the ins & outs of that. Good Luck to you though.
