Start by working on a farm for 6 months and see if you really like it. Farming is a 10 to 16 hour day 6 or 7 days a week and the risks are very high.

Livestock, crops, a combination? What is your experience? If you did not grow up on a farm - go to work for an existing farm.

If you could find an existing, working, productive farm for sale - that would save you time and labor.

It's not an easy life. I was raised on a farm and crops/animals need 24/7, 365 care.

Assuming you don't have drought, floods, disease or accidents - you still are working dawn to dusk. Once you harvest your food - you need to store it or sell it.

If you love the land and cannot imagine yourself doing anything else - go for it. Anything less than total dedication and love - you'll end up with heartbreak and a whole lot of debt.

I'd start as a hired hand on another's farm, to learn the ropes. The apprentice method might be best when trying to understand an occupation as complex as farming. A college degree in Agriculture will only take you so far...

Don't do it, unless you really know what you are doing.

find a practical use for your own body waste, then you'll be following the first rule of farming, wastnot want not

ohbicuriousguy
First, get a boat load of cash.
Second, use some of that money to bribe a congressman to give you lots of subsidies.
Third, use the rest of the money to set up your farm.
Fourth, break your back working the farm for a few years.
Fifth, fail to make money because you refused to sell out to the big corporation who offered you tons of money for your land.
Sixth, live the easy life in the funny farm cuz you lost your mind busting your azz for nothing.

1st, buy or lease some land, then get a tractor and all that stuff you'll need and plant seeds... I don't know, I'm no farmer! I shop at Aldi's...

From a business aspect, first you must determine your product and your market. Free range livestock, organic produce, fruit orchard, etc. Next do you own property or are you going got lease it. You will need financing and a financial plan. Small Business Centers offer advice and often have free seminars. Farming IS hard work, not 9-5 M-F work. It also can be very rewarding, especially if you are family oriented.

If you had learn or studied in farming then start it, if not then go and find a job in a farm of your interest spend some time on that farm say a year or two, and when you feel you know every thing, then start it. don't start any thing unless you know 60% of it **** and bits..
