get a good book on starting your own business --- i dont know abou the US but there is an excellent australian book --- "Starting your own business" --- Williams --- i have taught small business management to adults and it was an excellent start --- check the web --- find someone to mentor you and do a LOT of research --- the more you learn the better it will be --- i dont want to scare you --- 90% of all business fail in the first 5 years BUT 90% of business where the owner learns and keeps learning succeed ---- find a good accountant and lawyer they will save you a fortune ---- best wishes |

You have to file taxes with the STATE. A flea market is a good place to start. It's just weekends, and there are lots of shoppers there.
It's been a while since I read the following statistic, but I think 95% of all new businesses end in financial failure so you want to be careful whatever you do.
PS - Strip malls (string of stores along the road/ highway) would probably have some available spaces advertised out front. |

I think the easiest and most risk free way of starting would be online, starting a store on eBay. It's cheap, easlily accessible by anyone with internet access, and you don't have to pay rent. e-Business is getting quite popular nowadays.
However the problem with this is that you miss out on the advantages you have of having a physical store, such as the customers being ale to see and touch the crafts with their own hands.
But then again, after your eBay store makes you enough profit, you can always expand in to starting up a physical shop.
When starting up a physical shop, you may have to consider a few things like market location, and inventory.

and advertise. then re invest your capital in more products then program yourself for lows and downs.
the rewards willl come with time.

1) visit small biz administration and down load all the forms and booklets. this is a big help and i am sure you you'll find it helpful
2)businesscapital- if getting aloan, you will need abusisness plan, although i reomend getting one anyways.
3)apply for a resale tax id number from the state.
4. decide what kind of entity the business will be.. llc, corp??

dont forget that you have to buy things so you need to start out with LOTS of money. then if you dont sell things, you loose money. |

depending on where you live you can find couses at community college (like a night class) that will go over basics of small business ownership
long story, short? it is pretty complicated and there are a lot of things to plan for
you need a lot more money than most people think just to get started and make it throught the first years when yuo are unlikely to draw enough customers to be profitable right away
read a couple of small business books, take a class, and educate yourself, then make some informed decisions |

First thing you need to do is decide about your budget how much rent are you thinking you would be able to afford. Any space in a small strip mall will be in the neighborhood of $14.00 a sq foot..or 1400.00 for a 1000 sq ft space.
Scout the area location is every thing. Make a list of inventory you think you need,research prices and put together a total so you will know how much start-up money you will need. Call the power company or talk to people you know that are in business to get an approximate price on power bills for that area,Phones also,Make sure your choice of location has adequate parking.Don't forget about counters,displays,desks,furniture, Hope this helps. Oh and check with the city and county for licenses and also state. |
