homer742 | How would you deal with bad retail customers if you weren't worried about losing your job? |
Yes, bad customers might buy something. Yes, they're human beings too. I work in a small retail computer store, and I've tried everything to manage bad customers, except for one thing. I've never tried simply going relatively unresponsive to sneaky, repeated questions ("Does this $50 computer have XP on it?") then resuming responsiveness if they figure out why I'm pretty much ignoring them. I've tried gently answering their sneaky, repeated questions with creativity and a smile; I've tried clearly & logically articulating why their answer is sneaky and pointless with me, both to no avail. I suspect you're going to tell me that ignoring the customer will make them the most angry......... P.S. If someone has a legitimate concern, even one that isn't actually legitimate, but it's reasonable to assume it is, I'm very accessible and helpful. Additional Details The bad customers are mentally ill, chem dep, "creative" about money due to being poor for a long time, and from other cultures where they think they can TELL me what I'm going to do for them. |

most are bad, they dont understand what retail employees deal with.
i'd just cuss them out, or ignore them and walk away, that would really make them mad. thats why idiot people pick on retail employees so much. they think they can vent all their stupid issues on someone who can not fight back. |

how does asking THAT question make them a bad customer? does the computer have it on there? is it clearly marked on the screen or placcard? if it isn't clearly labeled with XP... versus Vista, then you are the one in the wrong...anyway you are in the position which demands that you have more patience.
I'm no retailer, but i have done a stint at retail. answering the tame questions like that is part of the job. having a customer tell you how to do the tasks associated with special orders (and have them be all wrong) IS a "bad customer". to this point you aren't dealing with a bad customer, you seem to be dealing with your lack of patience. |

Every time they ask the same question make it known that they have already asked that. Maybe by saying "Well as I said earlier,"etc... or "To answer your question again," etc.. or "As I stated earlier I can not give you this or that but I can offer you this," etc...
You have to understand that just like YOU people want to get the best deal possible.
If you really don['t care about the job get another one. Or throw yourself into it and do your best to please people and take pleasure in knowing that no matter what they say or do you did all you could do. |

Let someone else deal with them. |

You say "Listen, do you want the f**kin computer, or not? If you want the f**kin computer, gimme all your f**kin money, and get the f**k outta here!" |

I sympathize with you. I don't actually work in a PC store, but I work on all of my family and friends computers. I get the really retarded questions all the time. It really drives me nuts too. Some days I can handle it with grace, while other days I have gone nuts. Really though, it is best to try and be patient because these people really are ignorant when it comes to computers. We could probably share many crazy irritating stories! LOL Anyway, if you want to annoy them, just laugh hysterically when they ask you retarded questions. Good Luck! |

I think that if one is paid to provide a service, one should endeavour to do so.
The customer is rarely right actually, and moreover usually and ****. However, it is not a retail assistant's place to judge, question or critique the customer either.
I would, as I have in the past many times, just smile and be the best representative of myself and the company possible. It's called dignity.
When you get home you can drink beer and fart and moan about the shitty customers you had.
Bottom line; I think you should be a bit more patient mate. Grow up some.
No offence intended. |

The smile is seen not only by them but by the other customers who hear these re-dick-U-Luss questions and see and hear your response
So that dumb shopper in a way is advertisement for you
Think how would you respond if you were a customer listing to nerd asking stupid questions and the sales person is real nice and understanding |

I also work in retail and would LOVE to deal with bad customers the right way.
People are so ignorant. They think just becuase you work in the store they can treat you like a personal slave.
For example I work In a music store. We rent the school instruments to the kids. Some Parent ask why we have to check credit for a 1000.00 instrument and they fight with me about it. "why do you have to check credit? its soo troublesome..."blah blah" The next time I am gonna grab the instrument and say "no instrument for you" and put it back........... |

i will be honest with them that costumers are not always right |

It is your duty to be helpful and polite to customers. If you can,t help a particular customer for any reason let another rep, or your manager take over |
|

quantumrift

Refer them to your manager. Period. I worked retail several times in my life and when customers get that way, I just call the manager over and let them ask "the manager". If you are the manager, though, you can do pretty much what you want in getting rid of a nasty customer (within reason, of course).
As to your specific question, just say "We don't bootleg Windows here. If you want a bootleg copy of Windows you might consider having your 14 yr old neighbor kid build a PC for you and bootleg the OS.." |

You should not be in contact with customers. |

I mean customers will always be annoyong and ask stupid questions. But this is your business...you need to make them feel comfortable for buying something in your shop. What they buy equals profit for you so you need to be curtious and anwers their every single question dumb or not. However, if you just work there and you don't make commission then I wouldn't worry about it |
