How would you feel about this if it happened at your job?
I work for a family business. Usually each year all employees get raises in May. This year no one got a raise; the owner of our company said there wasn't enough money for raises. Well, it seems lately whenever the company gets ahead profit-wise (I know because I work in the office), the owner is spending more and more of the company money on personal ventures, home improvements, and stuff for his girlfriend. Still no one has received a raise. Many of the guys who work here have wives and kids and struggle to make ends meet.
My question is, does the owner have the right to do this because it's HIS business, or is it actually pretty shitty that he's taking away company money for his lavish lifestyle? Oh and he does get a generous paycheck each week.

You are justified in being PO'ed! But what else can you do aside from throwing a temper tantrum? It is after all, his company. I work for people the same way...although they give out raises when they feel necessary and not yearly. So, we are stuck dangling until they feel it deserved, to give a raise. Meanwhile they are taking trips to their private island and throwing extravagant birthday parties for their siblings and writing them off as a tax break!
I suppose you could waste your energy getting upset about this, but in reality we all have a choice to stay in the position or not. And the boss does hold the cards...so, we are all slaves to "the man" thats just how it is. My advise to you is make the best of what you have, there are those without jobs and would give anything to get a paycheck. There will always be those out there will less, or that have to struggle, but that doesn't make them less of a person. Keep your ears open for job opportunities to pass on to those that need it and pray that "boss man" gets his nose out of the air soon and realizes that if the employees aren't happy...the company struggles. Christmas is coming, maybe there will be a lil bonus for you this year in leu of the raise?? Ill hope and cross my fingers for you guys.

If he is 100% owner he can buy sixteen trucks of popcorn with it if he so desires. It is his money to be spent as he sees fit. Your only option is to quit and get a better job.

You can be pissed off as much as you want, and I agree it's justified, but in a business owned by one person, he or she can spend the money however they want - it's his to spend. Unless you have a contract that states specific terms (no one normally would in a small family business situation), all you can do is be mad and look for another job.

It's his business, he can do what he wants.

But if he doesn't take care of employees he runs the risk they'll find a better job elsewhere.

Yes he does have the right. He created this business to create wealth, and he will spend it as he See's fit. Has anyone tried talking to him? If nothing works, you can always find employment elsewhere, and he can always find a replacement to continue making him money so he can waste it on his lavish lifestyle.

Do you have a contract that states you will receive a yearly raise? The owner does have a right, he is the owner, although, it may not seem fair to his workers, especially if they are accustomed to a yearly raise. Like they say, " If you don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out".

The Owner can set the pay scale to anything he wants, as long as he meets Government standards. It's just what you said about it...look for another job.

His business....private company allows some leeway but from an IRS point of view, he could be in trouble if he is not reporting the extra stuff he gets. If there are investors in the company he could be commiting fraud.
It might be time to look for a new job. This is about to start spiraling out of control.

oma_30701
Sorry His business his money, and companies are not required to give pay raises. I have worked places that you didn't get a raise for two or three years due to pay freeze.

tuberk768
His business... his money... his perrogative.
That's just the way it is.
Don't like it? Get a government job.
