How would you handle an employee, whom I supervise, telling me to shut up and mind my own business?
I work with an employee who has a sibling who is married to my brother. Unfortunately, my sister and I do not like the person he married. We told him of our extreme dislike and the next thing I knew her sister, with whom I work, was telling me to mind my own business, shut up, etc. Then, I came in one morning to my desk being messed up, papers everywhere, etc. How would you have handled this?

First, keep in mind that you started a situation when you gave your brother negative reviews of his wife. It is okay for you not to like her, but you should be keeping that opinion to yourself.

As far as the employee you supervise, I would have a talk with her. I would tell her that neither of you can allow outside issues to interfere in the workplace.

You fail to mention if the comments were made in the workplace. If you made comments about outside issues at work, you can't condemn the other person for responding.

So make sure your side of the street is clean before you start any sort of disciplinary action.

Write her up for insubordination immediately, spell out how you expect employees to behave in a professional manner, warn her that further insubordination can lead to termination in the notice and file it away

Keep personal life out of business. Especially if you're her supervisor. As for her being a subordinate and being insubordinate, I say you should have a talk with that employee and give them a verbal warning, if it is plausible. If you instigated the situation, then shame on you. You should know as a supervisor to not be talking with your employees about personal issues. This is a lesson I learned long ago.

If it is indeed the same person then what happens out of work should stay out of work. If she is bringing this stuff to the workplace and making your job harder you have to discuss it with her in the presence of your supervisor then if she continues at work, reprimand her.

If she told you to shut up and mind your own business in relation to job issues then recommend her for suspension or termination for insubordination. However if it was in regards to family issues then you really should deal with it as a personal issue and state your views to her outside of the workplace. Finding your desk messy is not sufficient grounds to assume so catch her in the act.

You do not bring personal issues into the workplace.

By bringing it into the workplace and disrupting things, you both will end up getting fired. If possible, transfer this person out of your unit, so you do not have any contact with her.

If this doesn't work, one of you will have to leave.

YOU are also susceptible to being sued by the employee for crossing the line between work and personal!
