What country are you in? In the UK, I don't think anyone under 14 can be legally left in charge of children.
You could ask at your local council what the bye-laws are.

geoffrey_0007
I don't think you are of legal age to be left on your own, never mind baby sitting, wait till you're 16 or 17 before contemplating this, also you will need to attend a child minding awareness course and participate in the criminal records bureau check (CRB) ask at your jobcentre for details.

Ziddyda!
make comics and then sell them
p.s. try caring for an uncooked egg for 1 week without it being in a bunch of soft stuff! keep it with you 24/7 and dont break it

Ber
Probably not, you can try though.

AlienSunflower
As a mother i would never trust a 13yr old to babysit my child, you are still a child yourself. If you are in the UK, why not try doing Avon or something like that. Or even a paper round.

I started babysitting when I was 14. So it all depends on the people that you are trying to babysit for. I knew the people and my parents vouched for me. It's all about the way that you act around them. But a random person off the street may have a little trouble leaving their precious child with someone your age. My advice: Just try. The worst they can do is say no.

~~I started baby sitting at age 13. It really depends on how you present yourself to people. I know some 13 y.o. I would trust much more than some 16 y.o. See if your local fire department or city parks offer any kind of CPR training. This is a great thing to know when responsible for children, and would give parents great piece of mind. It would give you a clear head in case of emergency. So if you present yourself as mature and responsible I think people will use you. Never take your eyes of kids for a minute and you won't have any worries!~~

Which country are you in? It matters, because laws about what you can and can't do vary a lot.

Mr European
Why would people pay you to sit on babies? lol jokes
People might think your responsible, start with family or close family friends and see if you like it. If you do like it then put an advert in a local newspaper or local shop window.
Good Luck !!

Well. You probably want to get a red cross baby-sitting CPR certificate (i did it during girl scouts) once you get the permit, you can show it to your neighbors who have kids. The most responsible babysisters should ask question they should feel covers the whole 9 yards. I'm getting ready to turn 13, and i'm already a mother's helper, but i have shortly, baby two kids for 30 minutes while the mom was out shopping at the outlets. A good thing to do is always ask what not, and what to when the child misbehaves. You might want to wear combfortable clothing... the kids will want to play with you.
Also check out American Girl's

A BABYSITTER'S GUIDE: for first timers and yaddayaya...
anyway i know american girl is a little too little kiddish- but you should so check out that book! That's where i got most of my infromation.

I had a lot of friends who babysitted when they were 13. I hear its really fun but you have to be able to take the responsibility and the pressure. Its a really hard job too. But if you are responsible enough I don't see the problem. Just make sure you start out easy with one kid and maybe someone you know

jenzsweet20
I started babysitting when I was 13. I think it's a good age. But first I took a class through community education on the basics of babysitting, and I got a card that certified me - it heped a lot! You should check into that :) Good luck!

rachel w
yeah sure everyone does it

MissCrys
you can take a class at the YMCA and also if you have any younger family members that you have babysat for, you can use their parents as a reference or to make a good reccomendation.
I dont know how people will feel about a 13 year old, but if it's only for like a few hours after school or on weekends, i think most parents should be okay with it.
generally parents like to hire young-ish people because they charge less.

Well, you should ask around, a good start would be if any of your friends have younger siblings. Just interact with the little ones more, cuz once you get one babysitting job, people hear about it, and then suggest you (trust me I've been there). Good Luck!

Mikki
I'm 13 and Ive had quite a few babysitting jobs. If you have you babysitting certificate you should be good.

Well, people won't know if you're responsible if they don't know you in the first place.
When I was 14, I used to babysit this family's kids from my church, and they paid quite well (15 bucks an hour). Also, when I was walking around my neighborhood, I was asked by a neighbor if I could babysit sometime, and they were total strangers.
I suggest you try asking around your neighborhood or family friends if you know them well, and dress appropriately as to tip off that you really can do this.

nataeforever
well if u have bros or sis then say u watch them or lie and say u do or you baby sit ur cousins and put posters in ur local store and charge 5.50 an hour and $1 for additional kids so yeah!! lol

13 is a good age to start babysitting but i would'nt recommend doing for strangers if you dont have any qualifications. What happens if a child injures itself in your care or god forbid dies, it could all get messy and all sorts of allegations could start flying, if your not a registered child minder it means in the eyes of the law that you are not trained in first aid or how to care for the welfare of a child. If you want to start babysitting do if for family or family friends if you can proove yourself to them then at least you will have someone to provide a positive reference for you, maybe doing a childcare course is what you should aim to do aswell, they might have an evening class at your school you could attend. Its always best to have some form of qualification especially in this day and age, some people will sue for anything so keep yourself covered. Good luck i'm sure you'll be great

Hello =)
If you love kids, babysitting is great!
You'd definatly want to take the Red Cross Babysitting Course, first, though, parents love when you've taken that and have taken courses on CPR and know medical care =)
Babysitting for me really sin't for the money, sure you make some extra money, but you have to love to job because you don't really make that much money. I babysit with my friend, which is nice because sometimes the kids can get a little crazy! =P

If you think you're responsible enough, then you probably are. People don't trust us with younger kids, though, which is kind of a shame, even though I myself have babysat a 4 month old with no problems.

Bottom line: take the course! Get experience, maybe babysit your little cousin for the afternoon or a younger sibling. Be considerate of the differance's every family has and be respectful to each kid because they're all special. Be kind but firm if they misbehave, but make fun you guys have fun and don't watch TV, think of fun activities like Hide and Go Seek =D

Then to get noticed, my friend and I hand out flyers with our ages, experience, courses taken, names, rates, and phone numbers. We're huge in the 2 neighbourhoods around us (we live on an acreage) and are regular babysitters at almost every house with kids.

Being a babysitter is fun & rewarding, it's cool and cute to watch the kids grow up over the years. Have fun hope I helped! =)

PS I am turning 14 soon.
