I take all enriched classes and have a 3.8 GPA. Both my parents went to Princeton and they are both college professors.
I feel like I'm sort of 'lowering' myself by wanting to open up my own shop when I become an adult, but I reeeeally want to do this. This is one career that I think I'd really enjoy.
I honestly have no passion for becoming a doctor like my parents would like. They'd both be incredibly dissappointed if I didn't do something prestigious like that.
I'd still go to a good college and everything, I just want to run a shop and be an entrepreneur for my life career.
I know it's hard work, but I still feel like this is 'lowering' myself and maybe not using my full potential because I'm not becoming a doctor or lawyer or something like that.
Please give me advice on this.

Your Mum and Dad wants what (they think) is best for you and as a parent, it's pretty satisfying to be able to say "my child is a doctor/lawyer/accountant....".
I really want my kids to take a "gap year" after high school and before Uni/College. It will change their lives, get them out from under my wing and turn them into adults - life administers lessons slightly differently to parents!
Could you travel for a few months, either in the US or outside? In many countries you are an adult at 18 and deemed capable.
If you want to have a retail business you will learn more by working in one and soaking in all the less glamorous aspects and by working in a variety of outlets. This will assist you to be well rounded, balanced and make a sensible decision. And, if you are travelling whilst doing all of this..... wow - what a woman your mum and dad will have on their hands!
Good luck with your big decision (you don't have to do one thing forever anymore!)

Your parents can't live your life for you, even though they would both probably be willing to die for you. Pursueing your own dream is never lowering yourself...it is honoring yourself. You will be 18 and an adult soon, of you aren't already. With your grades, you can probably receive full scholarship and other financial assist to do it if your parents won't agree. I know a woman who became an OB-GYN because her parents wanted it for her. She has since quit and become a farrier...don't waste your precious youth chasing the wrong goals. |

Do what makes you happy. Your parents are going to strive for the best in you, but in the long run you are going to have to live with your decisions. If you want to start your own business.. Do it! Dont let anyone hold you back from your dreams. If your parents are disappointed in you, talk to them about it. Say that this is what you really want to do. They love you and they will understand! |

Always know the depth of the water before you decide to dive.Listen to your mother !!! Don't parents get any respect anymore? You listen to teen agers who are hardly wet behind the ears and have no conception of life. They have no discipline. You have an opportunity to do well. You have not indicated your experience with fashion. There isn't a thread in your narrative which indicates a talent for fashion. You want to run a dress shop ? Do you have the money to purchase inventory, pay rent and salaries, hire and train employees, go on trips to purchase merchandise, have someone mind the store when you are entrepreneuring , keeping books making payroll, paying taxes etc.? What do you know about competition? Will you be high fashion, disco type what? |

You are not "lowering" yourself. What would your parents wear if there were no fashion designers? It's your life, not theirs. But, all your parents want is for you to be successful. They know that if you become a doctor you can make a living, but they aren't so sure if you can make a life from a small business. Either way, do what you want, if you think it's right. Follow your heart, but listen to your head. |

But, doesnt mean that you recklessly disregard your parents opinion... take it as consideration.. but make your own decision...
older people most of the time wiser... maybe they see something that you couldnt see yet for this time being...
I have my own shop... I know how hard to manage a small retail shop against all the giant big box nowadays...
so every decision have consequences.. know it before you make one...
And keep in mind!!! There is no such occupation higher than other.. (unless immoral one)... how do you measure it... even a high level manager are no better than a garbage cleaner...

well, this is YOUR life right ? you should do whatever your heart tells you to do . so what if your parents are professors !! that was their dream , not yours ! do what makes you happy & your not lowering yourself !!! look at dolce & gabanna, versace and gucci etc .. good luck ; ) .. dont do what makes your parents happy.. do what makes YOU happy..after all , its YOUR life so you control it !!! |

You will not make a good doctor with out a passion for it and will resent it forever. Do not do it. It is tooo much time, effort and $, to do a half-attempt & eventually give it up. If you have a genuine passion & talent for fashion you will be widely successful & make anyone proud. You are not lowering yourself to anything.
I was a ER PA for many years and have now graduated with an architecture/interior design degree! Everyone in medicine is jealous. |
