I'm thinking of opening my own business.. don't know what yet.. any ideas?

The best home business that you can be sure is not a scam is one that you start yourself. It will depend on what you want, how you define to be interesting. A person may consider a pet sitting business to be the most exciting work in the world, while another person would rather watch TV than take care of dogs.

The key is to determine what your interests are, what you want to do, what is suitable for your lifestyle and your overall goals, and what can fit with your resources.

Dan Ramsey in his book "101 Best Home Businesses" has a chapter on how to find YOUR best home business. He suggests these 10 steps:

1. List 5 things you do best
2. List how others would benefit from what you do best
3. Find out how to give people what they want
4. Learn the value of your services to others
5. Find out who else offers similar services
6. Learn from the successes of others
7. Learn from the failures of others
8. Plan your own success
9. Make low cost mistakes
10. Enjoy what you do and how you do it

He then made suggestions on the best home businesses according to type. Here are a few of them:

Resale shops are a dime a dozen, but if you do it right and gear it toward a specific audience you can do very well.

For instance buy outright, no consignment, buy only name brand items in great shape, have music appropriate to your target audience. keep it clean and organized. don't be chincy on equipment, appearance makes a huge difference. You're likely to do best with 'teen' styles or ladies 'business' dress.

I'd say asking random people on Yahoo! Answers is probably a bad start.

You need to research, and most important you'll probably want to open a business exploiting at least one of your skills.

Search inside yourself, and Choose what you will excel in, then choose the right location, and promote to the target customers.

Maybe a coffee shop or bakery

What do you like? What are your interests?

Walk into your favorite stores, make a list of your favorite past-times, and explore your hobbies. You may find one of these is suitable as a small-business venture.

Once you determine your best possibilities, check out your local market. Is there a need for a business like yours? How will you get the merchandise/location/funding?

For example, say you want to open a 'cop shop' for tactical gear, boots, uniforms, etc. You CAN set up $10,000 relationships with 14 different vendors or you can go to a single-source distributor, such as--my personal favorite--U.S. Cavalry. That way you don't sink too much capital into a business which may or may not end up being lucrative for you.

Most of all, research, research, research.

I've listed some online newsletters which may help you get started.

try to find what interests you most. If it's fashion open a clothes/shoe shop. If it's food, open a bakery/coffee shop/restaurant. If you love flowers/plant open a garden center/florist. Regardless of your final decision, make sure you pick something that you love and that interests you. Secondly, do your research and make sure you know who your target customer is and if this is going to be lucrative enough for your needs. The best of luck!
