I've left my job today. Any suggestions on how to become self-employed?

To be frank, I would ignore a lot of the posts above that appear to be by pyramid scheme touts and get-rich-quick merchants. Not the best idea if you're serious about self-employment.

Firstly, I've assumed that you have an idea what area you want to be self-employed in - if you don't, speak to a careers adviser - try Learn Direct for a free session with an adviser - http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/ . If you need training, you can approach the Learning and Skills Council - http://www.lsc.gov.uk/ - about Initial Advice and Guidance or Skills Brokering through Train to Gain, if you are eligible. It's worth speaking to these people if you're looking at self-employment, whether it's as a labourer, entrepreneur, consultant, contract worker etc. There are many forms of self-employment!

As far as setting up as self-employed goes, I would recommend going to see Business Link, who can give you lots of advice and direction, mentoring, signposting to grants schemes and help you set up your business successfully - go to http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/ . You can also visit the HMRC Self Employment portal at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/ for info on registering as self-employed, and setting up your Class 2 National Insurance payments. HMRC are really helpful when you speak to them on the phone - 0845 915 4515 is the Newly Self-Employed Helpline, and they can arrange for you to attend a free workshop with one of their Business Support Teams. Contrary to popular belief, they make setting up as self-employed really easy over the phone, and it takes a few minutes, and relatively uncomplicated details, and you're all set, legally!

It may seem a bit of an uphill struggle, but there really is a lot of help out there for people who want to set up as self-employed. After all that, the only limiting factor is your drive to make it work, and with regular mentoring and business networking you can keep that momentum going to really succeed.

Good luck with your business! :o)

Have you considered network marketing. It's a great way to get started on your own because the structure is already in place and you generally have low start-up costs. The right company and team provides training and you can get started immediately. It's been great for me. You can check out what I'm doing at: www.yourwayoutnow.com

First of all, have you any special talents? If not, what greatly interests you? What is there a demand for in your local area?

Below are two tips - one for a free book (No. 6 on the list) and the other on setting up a business from home - which might be of interest to you.

Best of luck.

This would have been a good question prior to leaving your job! Being self-employed requires a plan, I don't think it's something you can just start without having any ideas at all. You should consider all your existing skills and how you could use these to your benefit. Think about your interests and hobbies and how these might be used as well. Although in order to be self-employed you would usually need to invest some money in your own business which is fine if you have some. If not, you'd need to look for an investor, which can be tricky unless you've got a very innovative idea.
Good luck!

The only thing I can think of is to pursue internet marketing aka online business...

there's a huge learning curve, but if you are willing to learn than I'd recommend that...

or you can also join a business opportunity...there are countless opportunities on the internet...just do your due diligence...

and if you wana achieve results, than simply commit yourself to always learning, growing as a person, implementing what you learn, and teach others the same...it's essential that you become a student of online marketing if you plan to run ANY kind of online business...may it be you selling a product/service or promoting a business opportunity...

anyhow...there are countless ways you can make an income...just have to know what you really wana do...Internet is a great source...

hope that helps...

Find your passion and follow it. Only you know what your passion is. So you should be the one to answer. There are so many business ventures. In time I'm sure you will find the right path.

If I may say so, but you are not too smart to be self Employed
because you cannot explained your self very good @ all. Now what kind of job have you left??
What have you ever do as a job?? and
What can you do??. Personally I cannot give you any advice because you have not give any thing to go with so I would not be able to give you any advice and I am an Employer for a very long time and I could help you but not @ this time because of
your selfishness. so ask the question again but explained your self much more OK???? GOOD LUCK TO YOUR NEW
ADVENTURE
