Be careful about accepting jobs from strangers, at least at first. There are scary people around.
Do you belong to a church? Try mentioning to a few mothers that you're available to baby sit. (Doing so while playing with or entertaining the kids is a good gimmic!) Do the same around your neighborhood, or at a library, or even at the grocery store. Make friends with the kids first. Chat a bit with the mother, asking about the kids, saying how cute and fun they are, and how much you love kids. Ask if they ever have trouble finding a babysitter. Then hand them a business card, and voila! Potential customer!
Business cards make you seem like a professional, and people will remember you later, even if they don't need a sitter now. They're easy to make on your home computer, just get a couple of sheets of perforated card stock and use Word Perfect to design your cards.
Getting customers is easy-- it's keeping them that's hard. Once you have a job, make sure you dress in nice casual clothes, you still want to look professional and responsible. Pay attention, follow the parents' rules, focus on the kids instead of the TV, don't pig out, and try to do a bit of light housework. At the end of the night, smile, be friendly to the parents (ask how the night went), thank them for their business, and tell them you had a wonderful time. Tell them if there was bad behavior from the kids, but don't sound like the kids won. IE, don't whine about how the kids kept getting up every 5 minutes, just say 'I had a bit of trouble getting Jimmy to go to sleep, but he's out now'. If there was serious bad behavior, put on a serious face and say "I'm concerned about...." This attitude makes you look competent and like you can handle anything. |

Tell your parents to spread the word around to their friends that you are looking for babysitting jobs. Maybe you can also ask a close friend's parents to do the same. If you attend a church, that would be a great place to find kids to look after.
When I was your age and babysat, I usually got 5 or 6 dollars an hour, that sounds about right for your age. Start out a dollar or two higher than you expect, because you can negotiate your price to make it lower, but not higher!
Good Luck |

make a flyer of what your qualities are and your contact info and how much you would like to make an hour then put them in people's mailboxes around your neighborhood |

I suggest you start telling people... you must know people with kids, use your parents to spread the word among their friends. Don't just advertise to strangers though or you'll get all sorts - only tell people you know, they'd spread the word among their friends. |

Make a flyer and post it in your local library, or anywhere that has a bulliten. As for the rate, it's different in every state but in oregon the low rate for a sitter is $5 an hour and most of the day cars charge anywhere from $6.50 to $8.00. |

At 14 it's probably best if you start for family or friends of your parents if that's possible. You are still quite young. Rates depend generally on the age of the kids, whether they will be awake or asleep, how late you are babysitting and how much people are willing to pay. It's something you should discuss before you sit.
You could place an ad in your local paper, or a card in a shop, but I still think you should only do it for people you know. you still need protected too. |

It would help if you took a CPR course at your local Red Cross chapter first just in case one of the kids you're watching sticks something in his/her mouth. Start out at about $8.00 an hour and work your way up by doing a good job. Beleive me,word of mouth is a powerful thing. |

Word of mouth - or a card in a shop window. If you know people with kids, ask them to let you help out, & if they approve, they might recommend you. Good luck. |

Just tell them. I think it would be ok to babysit for friends and family but for anyone else I would suggest that you should be qualified. The risks are too great to be an unqualified child minder. |

print flyers and leave them in your neighborhood's mailboxes (at houses you think there would be kids) |
