I am a sole propriotor working out of my home in Iowa. What kinds of things can I use as a tax write off?
I re-sell goods through a catalog that I receive at wholesale. I am the only person involved in this business. I use my own S.S number as my tax ID so im not sure how the tax game is going to be played now that I have this business. I was just wondering what types of things I can use as a tax write off. Thank you.

Anything related to the operation of your business can be deducted as a tax write off.

From the book "422 Tax Deductions for Businesses and Self Employed Individuals" by Bernard Kamoroff, here are some things you can deduct:

accountants
advances paid to contractors, vendors, professionals etc
advertising and promotional expenses
advertising
allowance for bad debts
alarm systems for your business
answering service fees
assessments of local governments for repair of water lines, etc
appraisal fees to determine amount of loss
assets
association dues
audit
automobiles used for business
attorney fees
ATM fees
awards to employees
bad checks
bad debts
bank charges
barter transactions
benefits of employees
billboard rentals
books

And a lot more. I suggest you get a copy of this book to learn what you can write off come tax time

Check with the IRS rules governing tax deductions, especially assets and depreciation

Anything that you pay for keep a receipt(office supplies, lunch with clients). If you have an office in your home. (It has to be a dedicated office, not just the corner of the dining room.) You can possibly write of part of your utilities. You are going to end up reporting all of this on a Schedule c on your next tax return, so a good way to get an idea on what you can write off is to go to www.irs.gov and print out a blank one. Also keep a log of mileage you drive for the business. Also, keep a log of your inventory, in dollars-2 # one beginning of yr, one end of year. You can also go tto a local tax prep office (not H&R or Jackson Hewitt, but like a smaller privately owned one) if you have one, your tax prep ppl. And they are usually happy to help. It makes their jobs easier at tax time if you are organized.

phone used for business ,office space in the home, supplies, materials, repairs to equipment you use for business, postage, miles for driving involving business, renting of any equipment for the business, insurance for the business, health care premiums for you and your employees, employees salary, cellphone for business, thats just to name a few you will need to keep some accurate records on some of these such as mileage and will need to know the square footage of your home office but for a complete look at things obtain a copy of a schedule c for from the irs website on the forms link and it will give them all to you

You'll be able to deduct the cost of any equipment you use in your business. (the computer being the most obvious :-D ) Interrnet access fees, cell phone, etc. An accountant may ask the percentage of services useed for biz. And prorate it. Any office supplies U use, gasoline, mileage, hotel, whatever. Any subscription fees to the catalog reseller svc. Dues, basically, any cost to you needed to conduct business, can be deducted. The most common way of "figuring" is to take the total dollar amount and subtract it from your total $ earnings for the year. (the result being your "adjusted anual income")

Gas is a big one. Fees for the catelogs that you purchase from. Business cards. Advertisement. Phone that you do business on. There's a form you can get from the IRS to determine how much of your house payment/rent is deductable by determining what percentage of your home is used solely for your business. I think even the money you pay to your accountant to DO your taxes is deductable. Anything and everything you have to purchase for your business is deductable. Pencils, pens, paper, office supplies you use. The list is endless.
