I am going to start my own small business what should I expect to pay for health insurance?
I am going to take the plung and start my own business and I know that I will need health insurance. The first one that comes to mind is COBRA but I know that it is around $600 a month are there any cheaper options?

if starting a small buisness and don't have a lot of income coming in at 1st I would look for health discounts becuse it is now possible to access affordable Dental, Vision, Prescription Drug and Chiropractic Care just go here http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/40386189

or for other options goto http://coxinternational.biz

The nice thing about COBRA is that you can keep your same doctors and get the same level of coverage that you currently enjoy. I've been using my COBRA while starting my own business. That said, check into the National Association of the Self Employed. They are a business advocacy group with reasonable membership fees and offer health insurance. I know people who use this program and are quite satisfied. See the web address below for more information.

Unfortunately there are very few cheaper options especially if you are seeking equal health insurance. Most companies are offered group rates and that is what keeps their premiums down. Obtaining a single policy for you and your family without a group plan will be costly. Keep in mind that as a sole proprietor, health insurance is a tax deduction which may help you at the end of the year (if you are not paying quarterly). Once you strike out on your own, you are responsible for your own taxes as well, and this insurance could become a break for you on your self-employment tax.

Good luck on the venture, I ran my own biz for 24 years.

Depends on your age, marital status, health, decuctible, etc.

Shop around for sure, you can do a bunch of that online. Then before every renewal, shop around again. It can get to be a pain but it's worth it.

Check with your local chamber of commerce.

once you get one Full time employee you can get health insurance for both. As for cobra, I say its called cobra for a reason... It bites you in the butt. Go to an insurance agency and ask them what they can offer.

You could look into Ameriplan or United medical plans. Those are two medical insurance company that offer medical plans.

Please see my company's presentation for products that might be added in your business. Good luck on your search!

It sounds like you just want to insure yourself....if this is the case...

TWO THINGS:

A) If you have any sort of previous health condition (I do), it is IMPERATIVE that you maintain continuous healthcare coverage. I believe the allowable "non-coverage" period is 73 days (odd, I know). After which, your new heath care insurer can deny (yes, flat out, legally DENY) any claims to which they believe to be a "pre-existing medical condition" if you have eclipsed this period of time w/out any health care coverage.

Therefore, by all costs, you need to get coverage before this period is over. COBRA is the easiest way to do so, as it basically keeps your existing coverage at the rate that your previous employer was paying...this will vary GREATLY due to many factors, but not limited to: number of lives covered, type of coverage offered, rate of deductible and/or co-pay, etc.

That being said, if you're starting up a business you might need to cut corners a little bit on your own health care--meaning that you may have to hedge a little bit of a bet and elect to have a higher co-pay / deductible / reduce / remove some coverages that were available through your previous employer that you do not deem to be absolutely necessary. From that point, you can shop many places on-line for independant healthcare. There are more than a couple companies out there that specialize in just that. Do a google search for "independant healthcare", "entrepreneur healthcare", and investigate your local bluecross/blueshield to see what individual plans they offer as well.

Regardless of who you go with (electing to activate COBRA, and thus, your old insurer, or another provider) make sure to do so within the time frame given above! This is a must!

Best of luck to you and your venture!

Cheers,

Mike

Costs will depend on where you live. Each state has different costs because of different laws that determine who must be covered and who can be left out.

I signed up with a company called Business Resource Services. Through them, I was able to access group health insurance prices with Blue Shield. Then I could sign up for a high deductible policy with a health savings account, which is just about the cheapest way to get insurance these days. Insurance rates in our state are very expensive, but I got one of the cheapest policies available in the state, even though my business consists of just me and my husband. It was certainly cheaper than COBRA.
