The ones that aren't scams actually require work on your part - and if you're in need of money soon then you're likely to be sorely disappointed in any of those as well. Most of the legit opportunities out there take time to build - so if someone makes an outrageous claim of income it probably isn't true ( and those that are true sure didn't make that kind of money when they first began ). This is a very good Irish website, I think most of the information here would be applicable to the UK also.

http://working-from-home-ireland.blogspot.com/

Time & effort required - but do your own research on what is best for you, don't take the advice of myself and others as gospel from this type of forum.

http://work-at-home-tips.blogspot.com/

I have other ideas that may help - one of them is an online opportunity but another is one that will require a little effort to market yourself - try some data entry for local businesses, many of them don't have the time to do it in-house and will gladly pay someone else to do it. Professionals are a good place to start, lawyers, doctors, chiropractors, etc - they need their "in-house" folks doing other things rather than busy work.

Hope it helps!

Sometimes 3rd party validation can be beneficial when we're evaluating something of importance. Here is some information that helped me better understand how Corporate America views Networking and Direct Sales.

In a past issue of Fortune Magazine (the one with Bill Gates on the cover) there was an interesting article focusing on the sputtering economy, and the independent contractors (associates) who are re-energizing the retail industry through the art of direct selling.

Here are a few paragraphs I that caught my attention:

"Call it the age of direct selling. With its emphasis on personal, one-on-one relationships between distributor and consumer, convenience, and a high degree of consumer education, the industry may be tailor-made for today's consumer and company.

"The result: The industry, with sales of $28.7 billion in the early 2000's, up 7.5% from before, has become a magnet for both corporate behemoths lured by its efficiencies and dozens of entrepreneurs attracted by the lower cost of market entry .

"...for example, Warren Buffett's biggest purchase was The Pampered Chef ... Hallmark's Binney and Smith is launching its own direct-selling company, called Big Yellow Box by Crayola .

"Most direct-selling businesses now employ a multilevel system, in which distributors earn money on their own sales in addition to those of people they recruit (called the 'downline') and individuals brought in by their personal recruits.

"That's different from the single-level approach, in which you only get commissions on your own sales. In 1990, about 20% of the Direct Selling Association members in the used the multilevel plan; today, it's about 80% ...

"'I saw ... something that I could do with my sons,' said Russ Widger Sr., a former manufacturing company owner ... 'I thought, with this business, they could do in about 10 years or less what had taken me more than 20 years with my conventional business.'

"'[Direct sales] provided me with security that I would not have achieved if I had continued working a regular job,' claimed Meg Kelly-Smith, a former banking executive. 'I compressed an entire career's worth of earnings into about five or six years.'

"A growing number of distributors are placing orders through their company's web site instead of using the usual faxes or snail-mail orders. Distributors are using ... web sites for help in recruitment and training ... and as a channel for customer reordering.

"In 1990, Lisa Wilbur was laid off from her $15,000-a-year secretarial job, living in a 12 by 70 foot trailer with her husband, and trying her best to stave off creditors. Then she decided to sign on with Avon . Over the past ten years she's made more than $1.4 million in bonuses ... not every representative makes nearly that much money or wants to. Many reps ... get into the business with the intention of working part-time or even, say, earning a little extra around the holidays.

"Although today's economic times offer a variety of challenges, solutions are available for those individuals willing to seek them out. With direct selling companies providing alternate avenues for income generation, more and more people are able to give their current jobs the pink slip."

- Fortune, The Power Issue, vol. 148, No. 3

This industry is being embraced by not only corporate America but business minded people around the globe. Network Marketing is no longer considered fringe. It is turning into mainstream business.

If you'd like to discuss this with me personally I'd be happy to give you a call. Make sure you leave your contact information at my website and I'll get in touch with you right away.

You've received a lot of good comments and many links to various opportunities. I too will add mine.

So, it depends on whether you want a work at home JOB or a work from home business opportunity as to whether my comments will be relevant to you. Regardless, I hope my answer will be of some benefit to you. You are right, you should not have to pay to start a JOB, but you can expect to pay to get started in a home based business. You should ensure however, if it's a home based business that the costs to get started are reasonable.

Let me share with you a little of my experience and add my two cents worth.

There are many businesses opportunities advertised on the internet, many of them legitimate, successful businesses, many of them not!

It takes diligence to weed out what's what.

Without intending to pin tickets on myself, I consider myself a reasonably well educated person with professional training and life experience behind me, but........

I have been 'taken for a ride' with a couple of online opportunities offering much and providing little - or less - nothing. I lost money when I could least afford it and I became very angry. Not as much as you though - I feel for you.

Having said that, I was also desperate to improve my financial situation and being a 'suddenly single' mother of four who has health issues, I felt that home based business was the only way to go.

So, I started researching - DETERMINED NEVER TO BE SCAMMED AGAIN.

In short, here's what I've discovered:

For any business to be legitimate, it must offer either a product or a service. If it doesn't offer product or service then it is a scam and illegal.

Be aware of get rich quick schemes - there is no such thing. Any legitimate business takes work and effort on your part and requires building. It takes time to build the foundations of any venture - how much time is dependent on your own efforts and relatively speedy advancement is certainly achievable if you are prepared to put in the hours. (As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.)

Ensure the organization offers full support and training. It's easy to sign someone up for a business but it takes commitment and effort on the part of the enroller to train and support you in your efforts. Make sure you are not going to outlay your money and then be left with no communication or help.

And speaking of money - determine how much the business is going to cost you to get started and what that fee actually gets you. If it only gets you permission to view a certain website then I'd seriously think again.

It is reasonable to expect some start-up and on-going costs in a legitimate business - no such thing as a free lunch - but determine, not only how much is will cost you to start but more importantly, what your ongoing costs will be. A business may be low cost to start but then require an outlay of thousands of dollars each month to qualify you for your pay.

Don't be forced, convinced, badgered or 'talked into' committing to a cost which is above your budget, no matter what the apparent 'limited' offer may be. Many scammers offer you a reduced price but 'only for today' for instance. If a prospective business partner is not prepared to help you achieve success without causing you undue financial stress, then I'd be steering way clear. You know how much money you have to invest in your business, whether that be $50, $500, $1500 or more. Anyone offering you a business opportunity should be able to cater to your budget to a certain degree.

Ensure than any organisation you are looking at joining is listed with the Direct Selling Association. Direct Selling and Multi Level Marketing businesses are very legitimate and legal and are certainly not pyramid. Pyramid schemes are illegal. MLM and Direct Selling businesses are very, very profitable if conducted in the correct way. Check the company's Compensation Plan to see what benefits you are entitled to and how teams are structured. This is very important as some team structures result in a high attrition rate, which benefits no-one.

I am currently involved in my own very successful home business and whilst it is not my intention necessarily to promote my own business here, I encourage you to visit my website and also another link which I will post here - You will find further links on what to look for in a home based business.

If you are serious, and I only work with people who are committed, I would love you speak with you, (just fill out the form on my website), as I know first hand that our business is achievable with full of support and training (personal training too by the way - not just website links albeit we do use the web and email as a fantastic communication tool). Our business markets revolutionary and patented health and wellness products. There is no necessity to sell or stock product, to cold call or to pester your family and friends to get started. I operate my business purely online thus far but have other options open to me should I choose. Check out the links and decide for yourself if you would like to contact me further. The choice, as always, is yours.

Regardless of whether you choose to contact me or not, I hope this information has been helpful. I understand how daunting it can be starting something new especially when the internet can make opportunities appear so intangible. I wish you well in your search and in any venture you decide to undertake.

With Best Regards,
Denyse

I am involved in a great online affiliate home business. You get your own website, sales pages and auto responder and email campaign (a complete 400 day pre-written marketing campaign for you so each person that subscribes to your auto responder will automatically receive a new message from you that promotes your affiliate products approximately every 2 days for 400 days in a row) for free. However, there are expenses involved that cost me between 100-150 dollars. If you would like me to send you a link for more info. feel free to email me anytime. Hope this helps.
