Matt | I am starting my own business...? |
I am under 18 and I plan to start a business where I cook food at my house then take it to the customers. I will start out with three types of meals(then gradually add more): Mexican, Italian, & Gourmet American. Each comes with a main course, 2 sides, and a dessert. My questions are:
-What/how should I charge the customers?
-Should I name my business?
-Should I have business cards?
-Should I not have types, and just have a big menu with everything and they can order whatever they want?
-Should I have a website?
Please, don't flame me. These are serious questions. Thank you,
........ADIDAS........ Additional Details I dont really want it to be THAT big...just local. |

Thats very nice but if your going to sell food from home you have to be cleared by the board of health first. And when you are licensed to cook from home always keep your menu short. Don't get into many different types of food because you will lose money.
Yes use a website, newspaper advertisement and business cards. Get out there and sell your heart out or you won't make it cooking at home.
Good luck |

If you want to be taken seriously then, yes - you should have a business name and business cards. If you can afford to get a website, great -- websites are the best way to communicate information. If not, you can also get a menu made at Kinko's until you can afford something better. Try not to spend too much money in the beginning, but also keep in mind that you want people to know that you are not playing around.
If you are serious about doing this, you should also find out more information about health regulations for serving and selling food. You should call your local city to find out how to get a business license as well. If you have the proper drive and motivation, you can do anything you put your mind to! Don't let anyone discourage you just because of your age. |

1. Check with your county and state about laws or codes for cooking/catering as there are many health regulations and liability problems related to catering like you plan to do. You will probably need insurance as well. (What if someone gets food poisoining from something you have cooked - or even thinks they have?)
2. There are lots of good books and websites on the topic of starting a business. Start with your state and county business websites and get as much as you can from them. Also look at www.nolo.com. they may even have a book about starting a catering business.
3. You need to get customers and you need to do marketing to get customers. This means try for things like a catchy name, a website, definitely cards (www.vistaprint.com).
4. You need a business plan. You need to understand COSTS, and time before you can determine what to charge. If you charge less than it costs you to make the food, you might as well not be in business.
5. Figure out how you can start small, and then increase as you get more customers. Your idea about letting your customers order what they want may be a good direction, but you'd better have some guidance about what and how much you can cook for the creations. I.e. give them some choices and perhaps let them modify or customize.
Good luck to you. |

- Charge the customers about the same as they would pay at a restaurant, otherwise there is no incentive for them to buy from you instead of just going out to eat.
- Yes you should definately have business cards and include one with every meal. That way if they like your food they can call you again!
- Have the menu, but divide it out into the 3 sections. Do like most menus do... take a long rectangular piece of paper, fold it into 3.... put one catagory of food on the left, one in the center, one on the right. Use lots of detail and description to make the food sound good, don't just put "burrito", put "Authentic Mexican Burrito - 1/4 pound of grade AAA ground beef, freshly sliced iceberg lettuce, etc all wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla" Get the idea?
- Make a website with a copy of your menu on it. Make sure it is easy to navigate, and make sure you include your phone number and an email for people to reach you with. |

I don't know how large you plan for this business to be, however the main rule: l. have a banker 2. Have a lawyer, 3 have an accountant. Check with the health department. At the very least you will be required to take a T.B. Test. There's probably some licensing involved also. Good Luck |

what you charge depends on you, you do need a name, a website would be great and cars to pass out to get your name out there. I would just put out a menu and offer certain things. next question is where are you going to store all of this food before it is cooked. lets say you offer 10 different meals. with 2 sides. and a desert, you have 5 different desserts and 10 sides. where you going to keep all of this food???? some questions to ask yourself before you embark on this journey |

charge materials.. plus your cost of delivery.. plus the cost of what you think your time is worth..
yes you should name it.. bad luck if you don't
business cards would be good..
more choice the better
website would help.. not needed if you keep it small.. |

Work for a company that is like the company you'd like to someday start up. That way your chances of succeeded will be much better. Besides, they may even make you boss someday and run it the way you want and you wouldn't even lose a penny in doing so. Or you can leave the company and take their clients with you. This way you'll have a good steady client base to start with. Starting your own business at 18 sounds too risky. Get some real solid experience first. Best of luck! |

For pricing: have customer's sample and which ever meal is the most popular, price it the most because it will be bought the most
Let the name be creative and fun
business cards? that is your decisoin, not ours
Make menus for the different types of food
websites are crucial. We live in a world of technology
(make it fun and creative though)
good luck! |

You can not cook food at your house and sell it. Check the laws. You can cook at parties held at halls and such things but before you start I would check the laws because you could get in trouble for selling food cooked at your home you live in. |
