MermaidWaterGirl | I am thinking about starting up a business...which idea do you like..? |
1. A Green Gift Shop : All locally crafted/recycled/green items
2. Social Dress Rental Shop : Guys can rent tuxes, why can't girls rent prom dresses and designer wedding dresses and designer party dresses.
3. A local & Organic Food Personal Shopping & Delivery Service: I would personally go to the local farms and pick up the hormone free milk and cage free hen eggs, and organic veggies...and deliver to homes.
Which idea do you like? Thanks so much!! I'm in a very hip small city about 300,000 people, on the ocean East Coast. Thanks!!! Additional Details to answer the question about paying gas money...that is where the organic food delivery business came from....less people driving to the grocery and all over town to health stores to get food...i make one trip for twenty people at a time. |

#2 - business will be dead most of the yr - only a couple of weeks at a time a few times a yr when those events come up - I doubt you'd make enough profit to break even and that would mean so salary for you - you would have to buy a lot of inventory and each dress would have to be rented several times just to pay for it - which could take a year or more |

I like #2 the best because it sounds interesting and appears to have the best potential to generate a decent margin. You need decent cashflow to succeed with a business idea. |

I like number 2. |

#1 is a good idea, but you have to make sure you are in an area that is social consious enough and wealthy enough to support such a business. The prices for green and handmade items tend to be higher than other options. Many people are happy to pay the prices, but you have to find the right location. I used to be the manager of a store that featured local products and crafts. One of the good things about this type of store is that you can sell the items on consignment. This requires less starting capital and less investment in each product. If you are in a touristy area at all, a locally made shop can be a gold mine.
#2 sounds like a good idea, but will require quite a bit investment. You will have to have a large variety of dresses in various sizes. you will need to have a seamstress on staff to custom tailor, and you will need to be constantly buying new inventory as women's dresses go out of style quicker than men's formal wear. You will also probably need a variety of shoes and accessories as well. thats a lot of starting cash to find, especially if you want high quality items.
This is what americans SHOULD be doing for their formal wear, its much less of a waste of resources. However, this is not the norm, and it will take awhile to change women's perceptions of formalwear to a rental item not a purchased item.
#3 doesnt seem like it would be particularly profitable. But this would depend on your community and the organic options available in the grocery stores and/or farmers markets. |

1. depends if you can actually make a quality product that someone will want to buy.. even if it green...
2. there is a reason women dont rent dresses, they need them altered to differently for each person and after altering it, it would be more expensive to alter it back rather than just buy/sell a dress.. also women ruin dresses within hours.. how are you gonna rent a designer dress and have the woman ruin it.. obviously she cant afford to buy it or else she would. i like 3 the best although food is already expensive enough.. |

Hi,
Please please do not do the dress idea.
I am speaking from experience. I lost approx $120 000 on exactly the same business. People don't want to have a dress unless it fits perfectly and obviously they can alter them. No one wanted to wear a dress some one else wore. Dresses came back stained, ripped etc...
I am now in the hairdressing business and if I can offer one piece of advice..... sell your time not an item. Your time is something you wont go broke off if the idea doesn't pan out, but if you buy a heap of product and you have no buyers then your bankrupt pretty quickly.
Good luck!! |

I would think in terms of what people need...
Our economy is not going to stay how it is because oil prices are going up and we are having a recession in the housing market.
Do you think someone is going to drive to your green gift shop or whatever when it is going to cost them 10$ to get there....? |

As a mother of a daughter who had to buy 4 prom dresses, I like # 2. Although, most girls do not want to be seen in a dress that someone wore "last year"! Take that into consideration when you make your decision. If the town is large enough, then that may not matter. Good luck! |
