There are some good ideas here already. I just want to add--be sure to get your boss to write you a letter of recommendation as he won't be there when you put him down as a previous place of employment. You can make copies and hand them in with the applications. |

As soon as you know for sure. Get out and hunt quickly. A lot of places will be hiring, temps for Christmas and if need be you can look again after January. But don't hesitate because the Christmas jobs will be grabbed up. |

You should be able to get unemployment and possibly qualify for retraining. Check with your local employment office. |

These days you can't count on a job at any time. I've been working for 13 years now and have been part of 4 lay-offs at 3 different companies (2 affected me, 2 did not). Life goes on. I was stunned the first time it happened...but now when I see it, it isn't the end of the world. You just have to keep your chin up and get back out there and find another job.
BTW, I speak of lay-offs and you say your plant is closing. My 1st lay-off was actually a pre-cursor to the plant shutting down. So even though I got laid off, within 6 months (and yes, right around Christmas), the company closed the plant so I wouldn't have been safe anyway even if I hadn't been laid off.
You asked what happened. The first lay-off, I had a job in 1 month. The second lay-off I had a job in 3 months. I've now been there for 6 years and it is the best company I have worked for.

I had this happen to me many years ago. As soon as I started hearing the initial rumors of closure, I started going for job interviews and had a new job all lined up before the doors closed for the last time.
Some companies will offer assistance to employees who are going to be looking for new employment, check with your HR department and supervisors to see if this is going to happen.
The holidays are the time that most lay-offs and restructuring and closures take place.
Good luck in your search, look at this as an opportunity for change, which can be a good thing. |
