golmaal | I get angry easily with people asking for discounts.? |
Hi,
I have a small shop and work on less then 8% gross margins on goods I sell. I strive make the best possible products and genuinely work hard at it. Now people come to my shop and demand discounts, I try to convince and dissuade them as much as possible but then my patience gives way and I become angry.
My customers are not novices, they are rich and fairly intelligent and have traveled the world and know that I am delivering great value for the prices. So when these people start bargaining I get angry.
Either I make the sale and still be angry or lose the sale again remaining angry. Which you will agree is a losing affair.
I was wondering if you would let me know of a few strategies to retain my margins and still keep my customers satisfied.
Thanks |

The customer's task is to pay as little as possible. Your task is to explain to them that they are paying as little as possible and what a great deal they are getting. This is a normal relationship and should not make you angry.
Be pro-active. Say "We are selling this at the lowest price in town" before the customer has achance to ask for a discount. "We price these at only this much" "What a good deal this is" "No one sells it for less". Say these things before the customer says anything.
Customers want to know that they are getting a good price, so tell them. |

If this is a very common thing in your shop the strategy of raising your prices could very well do the trick, raise everything 20% and offer 20% discounts to those who ask.
Or try treating it like a game, create the perception that your stuff is in demand and you just don’t need to negotiate.
Customer: I like this $20 trinket but only have $15
You: Oh, sorry I can’t help you, I sell those all day long for $20
Customer: Are you sure, do you really want to lose a sale?
You: Yes I’m sure people love that trinket, why I sold three of them yesterday to one lady who needed some gifts for her friends, I could sell it to you for $15 but I don’t need to, sorry.
Costumer: you’re saying you could sell it $15 and still make money but you wont?
You: That's right, It would foolish, I can’t keep enough of them in the store, I’ve been thinking about raising the price to $25
Customer: Well it is a pretty nice trinket, I’ll go ask my husband if he has $5
If you are offering good value believe it and stand firm, polite but firm, some my walk away but I think many other will give in.

Why don't you raise the price of your merchandised to retail like most stores, then you can give a discount. For example Mervyn's they sell pj's reg. price $40.00 but then they will have a sale 50% off and the pj's are $20.00 when in fact $20.00 was really there regular price from the start so the store is happy and the customer is happy. Yes even though large stores get a greater discount when buy large qualities. But you get the idea. Don't get mad get even. |

Tough call. First is not to get angry right?
Read or try courses out there for you on how to win a negotiation, negotiation techniques or sales person's course etc. Some of the things they teach is to always be prepared with your facts, your best outcome and the worst outcome acceptable for you before entering into a negotiation. Ie, have a range of outcomes. In your case this could means a range of acceptable price. Or a range of additional other freebies you can throw to them and call it a bargain.
I dont know what you sell but can you perhaps put a price tag and says it's fixed price?
Hope that helps. |

You will never get away from bargain shoppers.Just say sorry if I could I would. I set these prices low enough for you to enjoy and just right for my family to eat. |

You know the value, stay firm!
Put a higher value on your product. I do not mean up the price. To raise a price to mark down won't fool the discount shopper.
The problem is your confidence in your price.
People who seek to negotiate discounts are coming from places where that is a way of life. You could discount your self out of business. They want the best price, the lowest price, and even lower once you come down in price. Its an art to them, a game. Don't get angry. They know you better than you know yourself. They see your weakness by your honest look.
To tell you the truth I am a wimp :). When it comes to negotiating, I take a walk and let my wife deal with it. She knows the value of thing and won't settle! She is actually tougher than I. Surely prices are not negotiable at all in department stores, customers are used to paying asking price. So stay firm. Just think that is not done in larger department stores. Or find help that gets you your price :).
Yes it can be frustating and humiliating.`
Good Luck |

Be cool
It is the customers right to ask for discount.
It should be your business policy to be cool and politely reject the discount.
Once the policy established. Customers asking for discount will be very low in numbers. |

First of all, you could increase your prices and let them negotiate you down to a comfortable margin as a win-win exchange. Secondly, you can shop with your vendors and demand discounts from them. Thirdly, you can expand past your small shop attitude and get a 24/7 website exposure to increase your profits in a global marketplace. Finally, you can realize that your customers are consumers. They are concerned with their money, not yours. If you are feeling anger, maybe its showing? Concentrate on your brand. Make the customers want to buy from you. Sell the features and benefits and value of not only the products but of your company. Price is important in sales but it's not the only factor in where to buy. You've got competition out there no matter what you sell. Get to know your customers. That's one of the advantages of small businesses. Play up on it. Learn to negotiate so you both win. Ask customers for referrals to their friends for that $2 discount or upsell another item ... I can't give you that $2 discount but I can give you $1 off that and $1 off another item. Your real choices are to either get rid of the anger or get rid of the business. |
