Matthew E | I have a clean water source that I would like to start bottling to sell but I'm not sure? |
the steps I should take to do so. How do I go about starting to bottle this water source? What steps should I take? Do I need some type of approval from the FDA, etc? |
|

?

There's a guy down the mountain from me who does that. He sells it by the truck load to people who bottle it. I think that several septic systems probably contribute to his spring. |

I don't think this is something you can do unless you have the money to get the business started. I know I wouldnt buy water from someone doing this out of their home or something. Im sure you would have to get a permit to do this. |

you'll never be able to compete with those big companies - most of them just sell filtered tap water anyway |

Do you hold the rights to that water source? |

There is a lot involved in what you thinking about, the health department, the food and drug administration, you have to prove to the government that you have ownership of the water source, you would have to have a bottling facility, your talking big money just to get started, and no new company shows a profit until it's second or third year, can you carry the business that long, then you have to consider the competition, plus advertising, management, transport, hundreds of thousands of dollars!! |

My guess is that bottled water is regulated much like other foods. Tools/bottles need to be sterile, the source needs to be tested, etc.
If the source is on your property and you feel you have an adequate amount, perhaps you could lease the rights to a bottle water company thereby relieving you of liability but getting some of the rewards. |

First you need to get the water tested by a Registered laboratory for any bugs present.
You also need to get the tests done for suspended matters which are invisible to the naked eye.
You need to get the pH of the water tested as well.
You also need to get the water Assayed and Mineral content of the water Analyzed which you would print on the label.
The bugs can be eliminated by passing the bottled water through Ultra Violet Lights.
There is a lot of Legalities that you would need to fulfill. Its not that easy to just bottle it and sell it in the market.
You would need to employ a qualified Chemist to do all the Analytical work before production, during production and the final stage quality control.
This would require a lot of investment. Then you would need a sales force and Transport vehicles, etc.
Publicity and advertisements. Very costly business. Think twice before committing yourself to this business |

You're going to try to compete against every large bottler out there, including Coca-Cola? Good luck.
The fact is, you have no distribution capabilities, and hence, you're not going to be able to move your product to the stores where people might see it.
Besides, even if you could make the product (huge task as outlined previously by another contributor) and get it to the store, most likely the stores would not give you the shelf space. Shelf space is prized dearly, and they don't just let anyone have their product on their shelf.
You are really looking at an impossible task. |
