Contact the Agency in your State or County that handles the Licensing of businesses (usually the State Labor Commissions) and register your business name. This generally will protect the business name you selected in your specific State, however they are able to provide the forms and direction to protect your business name nationally. Hope this helps

You do not need to incorporate or copyright a business name. Just register it with the Secretary of State's office. You will pay a nominal filing fee. But that's all it does - register the name. It doesn't make it a business in any other sense.

First you have to make sure no one else has come up with it. You apply for a business license using that name. You also need to realize that there is a state and a federal business name registry, so you might want to check both.

You should register the name as a business at the local county clerk's office. That way no one else can register a business under that name.
