Welcome and I must tell you you found your man.
I am Nikos from Greece and I must tell you that I had myself some intventions since I was very litle .
I didnt made it out but I ve learnt a lot of things .
At first you must know that there are two kinds of registrtions and this is for all the world . Every nation usally has two ways to register a new work and protect its creator from thiefs .
There is the official registration that concerns consepts such as : books , scripts and kinds like that . In Greece we had the National Library , In the USA there is the WGA organization , official from the Congress of the States .
In Greece there is also the Organization of Industrial Property , there someone can registry for an engine for example . I am sure that in USA must be something similar .
But for a start remember this:
Trust no one . Not even me . But ...you must be prepair to expose yourself . You must do something about your creation man !
My advise: Start with a LAWYER ! Someone who is experienced is such cases . He can tell you the best way .
But first first of all do this: Put in an envelope all of the information of your patent and mail it with the regular mail to yourself . Make sure that no one opens it . You must receive the pacage that you mailed to yourself and be sure that there is the mark of the mail service on it and its clear . Keep it close . Its evidence that stands in a court .

Look up the US patent office website. There should be info there to get you started.
File a provisional patent ASAP to protect your idea.
DO NOT use the services of those 'inventor' companies.
Contact a patent attorney. (email me if you can't find one. my cousin has a patent law degree.) |

You need to patent the idea. It will cost $20,000 and take time to describe. Then start working on it, or pay someone to prototype it. |

You start by making drawings and stuff. Then, just start building. Get items from anywhere, and try over and over again. Once you get something that even merely works, make it better by getting someone's opinion. And maybe one day you'll be on American Inventor. I know you can do it! |

As everyone agrees, step one is applying for a patent. Then you'll know if you are inventor number one of that product or idea. Getting someone to manufacture it is the difficult part. You could go on the tv show, "So you think you're an inventor." I don't know if its still on but check it out. |

Start by doing patent search to make sure nobody thought of it first! Then get a patent. Then get it manufactured. And finallly, send me one of your final product, thanks. |

Use that money to make a prototype first. Then peddle your product to nitche shops. For example, For an electronic, call best buy or circut city, set up a meeting and show off your product. If there is interest in your product, find some where where you can get your product mass produced cheaply..I'm not an expert, but I hope I maybe helped |
