I have sold an item on ebay and found out?
that the postage is nearly £50 (Japan). The item sold for a tenner.I did say I would post to overseas, thinking continent, but am shocked. Anybody know what I can do without getting into trouble with ebay? Obviously I cant afford to post the item, it was a chess set and board.

I would email the buyer and explain to him/her that the postage is quite a bit more than you originally anticipated. Therefore, they will have a choice of a FULL refund (including actual shipping paid) OR they can pay the difference in the shipping price (state the amount you still need) and you will gladly ship it to them upon payment. This gives the buyer options and that way s/he will not feel like you "screwed" 'em. Try to be as polite and professional in your communication as you can. If the buyer is any kind of decent human being, s/he will understand and work with you.

Id explain the situation to them, refund them then put the item up for sale stating only local posting. Check postage BEFORE you put your items up for sale next time.

ouch sorry you are going to have to pay for it, although you can shop around and see who will ship it cheaper..sorry consider it a lesson learned...I did that on my first sale as well not so drastic but it happens...sorry you both are in a contract yours is to sell and his was to buy and pay for. He does not have to make up the differnce in paying for shipping, you had the price figured and he knew it was a steal :)
Been there done it, and the comment they left after transaction was done was great seller, wow what a price, sucker. I just smiled and said yup sucker...

You could try and plead with the buyer, and explain what happened

just email the buyer and say how much it will cost to post and im sure they will agree that this is not acceptable and will agree to a refund. the worst they can do is give you bad feedback but as long as you refund them the money then there should be no problem.

Why would you assume that anyone bidding on your auction knows what you're thinking? I think you should just accept that you'll need to give back word and just hope the buyer has good grace. Failing that you'll have to take some bad feedback on the chin and hopefully learn a lesson to be more thorough and engage your brain in future.

I think you are looking at airmail. You don't give the weight of your item, but if you send it by surface mail, small package rate it's a lot cheaper (around £7.00) Look on the Royal mail web site.
If it exceeds the weight limit try 2 separate packets.
It takes weeks and you won't make a lot, but at least you have completed the order.
There is a clause in eBay conditions that allows you to revise the shipping costs if they are a lot more than expected, but expect bad feedback if you just let your buyer down.
My strong recommendation is to contact the buyer and explain the situation. Whether you find a practical but slow method or decide it's just too expensive.
I have found most eBayers very understanding if you make the effort and communicate.
Good luck and watch those little tick boxes next time, I usually stick to the UK unless it's small and light, and even then I quote a much higher shipping rate for overseas.

You should have learnt the rules before You played the game.

You could apologise and say the item has been too badly damaged. Or be honest with them and just hope that they understand! But either way you risk getting bad feedback. I would go for 'My Alsatian dog has chewed them beyond repair,!!

just send a refund and tell them why you did it. If they leave bad feedback respond to the feedback with an explination
