SwimGuy | I make great money with my business, why does my mother insists that I go back to college? |
I quit college 4 years ago, I have not changed my mind about college: "College teaches you to work for someone else".
My sisters are both older than me. One of them was unemployed over a year after finishing her masters at 21 with a 4.0 GPA. She is currently unemployed.
My other sister only finished her undergraduate's degree, but could only find a job as an elementary teacher. She went back to college, finished her master's, and she's now trying to get a better job.
I'm the youngest, I quit college 4 years ago. I started my own business. Two years ago, I started making more money than my old classmates who did graduate. Then I started making more than the average college person.
Today, I'm doing GREAT. Numbers don't lie, my profits will increase next year.
My sister got her MBA last week, and now my mom is all over me about me going back.
College is not for me, I don't want to learn to work for someone else.
Why doesn't she understand it? Additional Details I still go to school to get some eye candy, and hang out with friends still studying. But college hasn't changed.
They offer seminars and talks about
"How to be interviewed for a job", "how to make your resume more attractive to EMPLOYERS", "How to be liked by your boss and co-workers".
That's stupid to me! I'm my own boss, I don't want to take classes on how to work for someone else. |

Give her the book Rich Dad Poor Dad.
It is all about the two mindsets that people have about money, time and formal education vs. practical education. . It is great reading. |

Did your mom graduate from college? If she didn't, then that may be a reason why she is pushing the issue. She is probably very proud of you and your business, but for some people the degree is more important.
Let her know that you may consider college in the future after you have established your business. It sounds like you are still young. I didn't get my degree until after 30 and my wife didn't get hers until after 40.
Good luck with your career. |

Good for you. At school, you'll learn how to be a better prospective employee. You don't want to be an employee; you want to be a business owner. Rock on. Go web based, have an IPO and make millions, just like that youtube video! |

Yes, but you didn't say what you do. If you're in an MLM company, you won't be making money forever, and your mom wants you to have something to fall back on.
If you're in a business you built, and have grown, then you'll probably do fine. Just keep building it, then sell it for a huge profit. Once you've done that, move on to the next project. This is how many people make good money and good lives for themselves.
The main reasons for college are these: 1. to have something to fall back on if your business fails; and 2. to give you some better business sense so your business won't fail and possibly you'll make more money.
If nothing else, I'd take accounting classes so you can make sure that you are writing off as much as you possibly can and to make sure that you're keeping the books correctly.
Good luck to you! |

Your Mum needs the certificate and the photo of you in grad gown to hang on her wall. Mum's can't always see that being happy means you are just as successful than someone who has all the education but leads a miserable life. Give your Mum a hug, tell her you love her but you are fine as you are. |

It's for your own good. They said the only treasure that can't be taken from you is your knowledge.YOU can't share what you have learned to anybody so you're mom is nagging at you go to back to college. |

Parents have had it drilled into them that college is the only way to be successful in life.
My wife's family is like that. All of them went to college and most of them have masters degrees, and so they see college as the only way to go for success.
On the other hand, while I do have a college degree, I don't necessarily see college as the only way to success. Many of my friends who are successful never went to college, and they out earn me by a considerable margin.
If your business is successful, great. Your mom will just have to get comfortable with the idea that her drop out child is a multi-millionaire. I'm sure Mrs. Gates doesn't lay awake at night wishing Bill had graduated from Harvard. |

You can run your business and take classes at the same time(1 or 2 courses every semester). You would have to be extremely selective in taking your courses especially your electives. I think an education brings along a certain level of maturity and confidence. I agree an education doesn't guarantee success but I think it also important.
Remember that you would want to set a good example for your kids in the far future. An education is a gift that continues giving. |

Some people really value degrees. My family is the same way. Finishing college is important to my parents. If you are happy in what you are doing, just don't worry about what others think. |
