Lovin' Berries | I need a job. I'm 20 years old and don't want minimum wage? |
I've worked in several stores since I was 16 but now I want something that pays a little more. 8 dollars is minimum wage here in canada. I'm looking for something over 10 dollars. Maybe 15? I'm currently changing programs in college so I don't think I can actually find work using my education. I'm transfering to a nutrition program at another university.
Anyways, I need work!
What kind of positions should I search for that would suit my age and salary expectations? Office work? A store manager? What else? Maybe something in the health care industry? |

Post your resume on monster.com. I had 5 interviews in two weeks and got a job that doubled my salary.
I have no college degree and I will be making as much as the RN starting out on my floor. |

You have to work your way up in a company.
Sometime you start at the bottom. |

Go to a community college and get a Business Management certificate... it doesn't cost much, and it takes only one semester to finish... then you can manage a store instead of work in one... |

go to a temp agency and apply there- let them know what you want for pay and they will place you in a job accordingly. i work for one and they asked me the minimum amount perhour, i told them $13 and they got me a job that pays $14.
some jobs are very temporary, some are long term temporary and some are temporary to permanent...
usually it's some type of office work- i'm working at a state job.... |

i think you should go find work in an office, healthcare, insurace or assistant manager jobs. those usually pay 10.00 and up here in the states so they probably pay even more in Canada. Also try the website craigslist.com, my friend always finds 10.00 and up office postions on that website. good luck |

Serving at a resturant is always good money (especially nights & weekends) I'm 21 and have been serving to put myself through college since I was 18.
The only cons are you dont always make the good money everynight...but on a good night you can make up to $20/hr
=0)
PS: No experience needed at most places, they train everyone in any resturant...even if they are experienced |

The bad part is that everyone starts at the bottom, and without a quality education and a Degree to show off you are subject to the avialble jobs that you are qualified for. Not yhe ones you think you can do but ones that emmployers hire you for.
You will need a steady work history to gain some wage increases and with you in college the chances of you finding a job for over $10 and hour ar quite slim. Once you have finished school and can boast a Masters, MBA or PHD then you can get those jobs that really pay. I would suggest that if you are looking for a bigger wage you should consider factory or heavy labor work, office work is note going to get you any where. You will not likely get a store managers position without previous experience and at leaset 5 years in the field.
It all falls back to the you need a good education to get a job, you need a job to continue your education, I can't get a job because I don't have a degree, and I can't get a degree because i can't get a job.
Sorry Charlie, we have been down this road, it stinks but it's one that you must travel in like to get anywhere. |

Do you have skills, talents and experience that makes it likely that you would produce results worth more than minimum wage? Think of it those terms - of what you can do that's really worth the money. Nobody will, or should, pay you just because you'd like it. But they will, and should, pay you for what you can do for them. Think about it carefully, figure out where you can be of real use to solve problems and make things happen. Present yourself as a solution to someone's problem, and back up your reasons for saying so, and you can do well. |

Instead of giving up your 1 job that pays 8 dollars and hour why not get another part time job and do 2 jobs. |

If you go to your community college and get a CNA certificate, (Certified Nursing Assistant) you can earn good money working as a nurse aid in nursing homes and hospitals.
This also takes about 1 semester to complete. This fits really well into your major in nutrition and will make you more marketable in the long run.
PS the health industry is starving for these, so you will always be able to find a job.
Also, find jobs that can fit your specific skill set. Something only you can offer. Tutoring jobs, IT related jobs, etc. -- Jobs where you need to have at least some skill -- pay more than jobs where none is required. |

If you can get a management postion, that would be ideal for you, but as you dont have much time being in school and all and you would probably have to work your way up within a company, that is a bit unrealistic. Have you looked at a customer service postion with a larger company? |

We have government internships in the US. Maybe you can find a student job for your government, they are generally above minimum wage and can translate into careers. |
