Since it appears that you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you'll start an outbound or inbound Massage Business with a store front. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.
The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a massage therapy business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.
You'll need to register the business with your state controller's office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.

Try the the U.S. Small Business Administration www.sba.gov. There should be a branch in your area. Check the website. Also contact a SCORE (the Service Corps of Retired Executives) counselor in your area --to find one go to www.score.org. Between the two they can help you with everything from walking you through the process of writing your business plan (necessary if you will need a commercial loan) to obtaining financing and opening.

Learn and write your own business plan, don't let someone write it for you.
Write the marketing plan also if you can.
Write the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP)
With all these would give you good understanding the business that you may get into and lot os things you can execute base on the outcome of the plan.
You'll be the smartest among new business starter and if you apply yourself and commit over the timeline projection you may succeed and profitable.
Once you pass this point let hear more if you need more help or keep asking in this forrum.

How about making "House calls"? Charge a little more - for your fuel and vehicle maintenance.
To promote your business, place an ad for a few weeks in your local weekly paper.
Put flyers in supermarkets and other places with public bulletin boards. To be appropriately placed on those public bulletin boards, you might have to complete a card with your name, address, phone numbers and web site info on it.
Don't forget to mention: "We make House Calls!"

you need money and lots of it. that is the hard part. i don't know where you can get a loan other than your local bank or family & friends. you can even offer them a percentage of profits if they want to be a partner.
if you want to find a place say in a strip mall or something, you have to cover rent (usually 1 year lease), utilities, insurance, advertising, furniture, etc. |
