You should register your domain yourself. They are not expensive and should not be a condition of hosting. Domains are akin to company names, take control of your own domain!
The easiest way for a novice to build a web site is to start with a web template. Web Templates can be customized and you can use the layout but swap the graphics etc.... this will get you comfortable with basic HTML design and an HTML editor (like Dreamweaver).

Then there are those more like what you are referring to that allow you to build your own website with templates, multiple pages, and many of the advanced features that you are wanting. I recommend GoDaddy for domain registration and hostmonster for hosting. HostMonster comes with a control panel and so everything is as easy as clicking... |

The best and easy way to start a website is to start a blog using blogger.com or wordpress and host it on your own website.
The blog will be your website, and you will find that it is much easier this way to change it and add fresh conttent to it, when ever you want.
