a) are a scam
b) sound too good to be true (and the get-rich-quick schemes usually are)
c) don't bring in nearly as much as you could make with a "real job".

Nevertheless, there are legitimate ways to make money online. A lot depends on having a product that people are willing to pay for, and the drive to work at it.

Some options are:

1. eBay -- there are people who make a living selling products through eBay stores.

2. www.cafepress.com -- if you are artistically inclined, you can create your own designs for T-shirts, mugs, calendars, and more, and set up a free basic "shop" (advanced shops are available for a fee). They handle the order taking, printing, shipping, etc. They charge a basic amount for the product, but when you set up your shop on their site, you can set a markup on your products. Cafepress gets the basic amount for a sale, but you get the markup as a commission for your design. So if someone buys a t-shirt from your shop, for $19.99, but the base price of the shirt was $17.99, you earn a commission of $2.

I've sold on both eBay and Cafepress, though only as a hobby at this point, so not a lot of money. But some people do well online.
