I think it makes something look cheaper because they are using the lower number even though its one penny. When you see $3.99 you first think of the 3 right? Now if something was $4.00 you first see the four, which makes you think its more expensive, even though it is but in reality it's just a pennys worth so basically they are the same price. It's all about perception. |

Most people erroneously think the business is trying to fool customers, but no-one's that stupid, right?
It has more to do with the way sales taxes are collected; retailers are "required by law" to collect taxes on sales, but to soften the blow, most remittance rates (how much the business 'sends in') are LESS than the collection rates (how much tax the retailer charges the buyer). The retailer keeps the difference as basically "invisible income". If the Sales tax rate is 9%, and you charge 99 cents for one hamburger, you will add 9 cents to the price, and the customer will pay $1.08.
If you do this a million times, you will collect a HUGE amount of money the customer will not notice & the tax office are not looking for! |

Depends on where you're talking about. If it's a retail store or online store, becuase it seems like it is less if they do it that way. For ebay for example, the listing fees are sometimes cheaper if you don't go up the the next penny increment. |

It's just an old custom. Hey, if it bothers you, put that extra penny aside and save it. I have a big, old water canister that clearly shows what "progress" I have made. It is wonderful. I take the contents of this bottle when it is filled, then have the bank enter and credit that amount to my checking and/or savings account. Believe me, it can accumulate a sizeable amount of money. I wish you well.

it means that you are going to buy some thing lets say about 5.99 the last cent that the store is going to take from you is going to the manager or the store think that if you saw points in the number like 9.99 you'd think that it is cheaper so you'd buy the item . |

Retailers will typically advertise items under $5, and $4.99 then seems like a great value for a low price. The theory is that consumers view items under the next dollar mark as a bargain. Once the price hits the next dollar mark, the price category goes up in the minds of consumers and consumers do not see the items as much as a bargain. |

God, I know! I would almost pay them that penny just to stop hearing 9999999999. I imagine that somewhere, someone told them that they could not charge more than five dollars, for instance, so they ask 499. And really! Like an airplane that costs 2,999,999. Somebody give these jerks a freaking penny please! Good question! |
