I currently own a cafe called Mugshotz Cafe. Its a cute little deli thats like a mix of McAllisters Deli and Starbucks. We sale a wide range of products, and for the past 6 years have done pretty well. Well now, things are definately turning sour. If I can't get my business back running, I will have to shut the doors within 5 weeks. I cant continue going out-of-pocket to save the business. What are some ways I can get my business up and running ? |

THere are a ton of ways to market and I would bet you don't have a lot of extra $ to do it with.
I have donated a birthday meal to residents of a local old folks home - I met with the director and explained I was trying to build biz and would like her to put up this 'poster' at the front desk (wall behind) we'd done on the computer to let people know!. Then I did contact the local paper myself and they did a feature story on our restaurant. (of course, free meal was for 1 and they had to have someone 'bring' them.. and usually they bought a meal so not a complete loss!)
We also donated 'gift' certificates for lunch to about 20 different organization and clubs in the area to 'give out' as awards to hard working/deserving members. We did the certificates on the computer. Again, they usually brought 1-3 friends with them who also ate!! :)
You can mail these to club sec or attend a mtg if it is appropriate. Try to donate to those that are in that range that comes to your deli.
Another thing we have done that worked well was made up a lunch or breakfast special - charge what covers your costs and a bit more and then run off colored paper 1/2 sheet flyers and get or hire an attractive gal to pass them out at various corners within a 4-6 block radius. Have her do it Thursday afternoon as workers 'get off' and Friday will be busy. I don't mean to be sexist but a late teens early 20s good looking girl will work best! :) Fortunately we had 3 nice looking daughters!! :)
Also something you need to consider is why has it gone sour?? Have you changed pollicies, cooks, menu -- what has changed that has made this difference (besides the economy)?? Was there a big price hike? Do you have a waitress or 2 that are sourpusses? I don't mean mean to be dreary - but are you sure someone is not stealing food, supplies or money from you?

well, when did it start going sour and was there something significant that triggered it? is your kitchen up to code including out dated food? Do your cooks take extra care with the preparation of the food? some people can tell the difference, how do your books look? I'd suggest trying to get in touch with chef ramsay, he'll turn around your whole business, watch kitchen nightmares on bbc |

In todays economic stand point everyones business is on a down slide. What you can do is think outside the box. you have some really good answers already. Another way is to maybe see abot getting a loan. Some banks may lend you money to stay open. Another way is to also see if you have friends and family who may want to invest in your cafe'. Incorporate all the ideas together.

Start requesting customer's email addresses in exchange for a coupon that you will email them.
Then email weekly with an email only special that will remind them you are there and encourage them to stop by. Of course you should also thank them for being customers and include a little info each time about the history of your business, favorite items, etc...

What you need to do is:
Find a way to get your company known, e.g advertise your cafe in the newspaper or even on TV if you have to
If theres no way to make it better you could sell your business and start up a new on in a well known area

Some ideas...
- Word of mouth: how can you turn loyal customers into enthusiastic cheerleaders, out spreading the word
- There are a boatload of directory sites, local and national, that list restaurants by city -- make sure you are included in all of them
- Encourage local clubs and organizations to meet at your cafe
- Live music
- Tap into some kind of fad or create one
- The same economic conditions that are killing you mean that there are a LOT of unemployed people out there. Provide a discount & a service that makes your place the place for unemployed people to be. (Maybe find local career coaches and convince them to offer free counseling one half day a week -- point out that it will help them promote their business)
