I own a small shop and I need marketing ideas to get new customers though the door?
The shop sells childrens and baby clothes and accessories and I need advice on how to dress my window to make it draw people in, and low cost marketing/advertising ideas (I have a VERY limited budget)! The customers I DO have are very impressed with my stock and my prices are low, but i need more customers (dont we all)!! Any sensible advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go to all the nearest doctors surgeries, playgroups, and nursery's and ask them if you can give them a supply of leaflets and in turn you will display their business (expect the doctors of course) in your shop. You need to advertise where most people/parents are likely to go, which also includes post offices and shopping malls, also if there is a train station near you then you most likely to come across people who sell the papers, why not ask them if they wouldn't mind sticking the leaflets in with every paper they sell, of course you will need to offer a token payment of say £10. That way everyone on their way to work will come across your advertisement.

As far as your window display is concerned, keep it simple, don't overcrowd it with loads of products, keep it to a minimum. It gives that slightly posh look.

Good Luck.

A satisfied customer is the best advertisement. It seems you are giving a square deal. Are you close to any of your customers so that you can ask them to refer people to you? Word by mouth helps a lot. If you are in a locality with poor transport maybe you could do home visits with some stock 2 or 3 times a week. Or a sign in the window: compare this with Walmart.
Good Luck.

try making small deals with neighboring shops, make a homemade slogan to put in your window and hand out little business cards to already customers, it works, word of mouth really works, and try a little meet and greet, maybe a little cook out in front, just some tips

skube22000
i would dress the window but do not over crowd the display as customers will also want to look into the shop as well as the display, u could maybe do a nursery setting with a cot, mobile, bedding etc, as someone else has already mentioned doing a leaflet drop at the doctors surgery, library, community centres, or local creche;s, u could also sell some of your products through e bay, or set up your own website, to reach a broader field of clients, also u could do a bill board which you could place on the street in front of your shop,
or just a thought how about parties for new or expectant mothers kinda on the ann summers theme where you go to the clients property for a few hours a night and you could give the host of the party a reduction or commission, or if you could afford to take on an extra person and perhaps get them to sell stock on a local market stall, fetes, galas,
good luck

This is something I wrote a while ago:

How about:

1) Offering freebies or extras? Like...if you are making electric scooters and trying to get them to stock it...say "Ok, if you take 100, we'll give you 50 of our latest safety helmets free". Then...if the scooters sell well...congratulations they will probably make a repeat order...and if the helmets sell well...they are happy and might make an order for them! Congratulations you got a product and repeat order for it and you got another product into the shop without even trying that hard! Although...don't go over and damage your sales so you end up loosing...put them on a condition so you end up winning...so make sure they only get the helmets if they buy 100 scooters.

2) Work for repeat custom! For example...(you are (again) the scooter manufacturer) you closed the deal on the scooters on Monday...they started to sell them on Tuesday. Ring up the company on Friday and ask how the items sold. If they sold incredibly well...they have the weekend to place another order! Here you could slip in a mention about other products you are developing. Ring regularly, but not in an annoying manner. Keep you in the front of their mind. Maybe...you could recommend some people to them and ask them to mention to the shop that it was you who recommended them.

For retail shops...how about putting some stuff in their bag? A catalogue? A discount voucher? A form to fill out for a newsletter subscription? If you know their details, write to them and ask them how the product(s) is going. Employ much the same tactics as if you are selling to the shop. The reason I say write is that their is no chance of them hanging up on you and you can put all the information you want to in the letter. The next thing is quite environmentally friendly and encourages them to shop at your shop for the eventual discount they receive. Change the bags you use to linen style 'eco' bags. Then, say that if they shop at your shop they give you a stamp on the bag. If they get 6 stamps (or whatever) on the bag...they get a 20% discount on their next order!

3) Sponsor a local company in return for recommendation'? Put leaflets in their establishment?

OK...now please don't get at me if these don't work or you don't like them! I don't actually employ any of these techniques yet...but I constantly find myself thinking up tactics to sell stuff (strangely usually in a school lesson!). I'll put some more up as I think about them. You have to change these to your product or service, but I hope you get the general gist of what I am getting at.

This is probably crazy but....if you can buy some mannequins three or four. Place them on Sundays at different churches nearby. (Outside of course). Well dressed and with a cartel with the name of your business, the telephone address and web page. If it works send me a check.

i suggest you make flyers and pass it on to childcare, nursery school, library, cookies bakery shop, and any places where kids are famous at. display your window with toys, child statues, books and fun attrative accessories that are colorful. advertise your price in front of the store or someting cute to catch shopper in the front of your store. i know you are on limited budget but if you have enough maybe a dancing little maniquine child (don;t know if it avaiable)

You've got one asset -- satisfied customers. So the most obvious thing is testimonials. How about some quotes from satisfied customers in the window, next to the item(s) they are talking about -- or if it's a person, then a picture of that person.

The most effective way to get new customers is to get existing customers to refer people they know, so don't forget to reward your existing loyal customers -- treat THEM like royalty, not just the new people who walk through the door.

It's often cheap to start up a frequent shopper program -- and you don't need fancy gift cards or whatever -- just one of your business cards or something you can initial whenever they come in is just fine!

Talk to your existing customers (light conversations -- don't interrogate them) about what they like and why they come back and what they'd change if they were in your shoes. Listen to them, and if it makes business sense, make some of the changes they recommend.

And don't forget to ask them if they'd be willing to refer someone to you if they were really pleased with their store experience.

Good luck!

I'm a Retail Store Manager (specialty items) and can tell you the first impression is so important. If you are gifted with a good sense of visual merchandising, continue to do your windows on your own. If you feel unsure, or perhaps are acknowledging this is not your strength, find someone who is good at it. A part-time employee, a relative, friend or even a student at an art school who may be willing to do it for free or minimal cost for the experience/portfolio.

Change your windows frequently, every month or so. It keeps customers interested and always wanting to come by to see what is new. The window setting should tell a story visually and not be a random mix of whatever. Example, Back to School with outfits for school, any accessories you may sell that fit the theme and "props" such as notebooks, pens, a lunch bag, some fall leaves on the floor around the mannequins, etc. Have fun with it, it will draw customers in.

Lastly, this sounds so basic, but make sure everything is neat as a pin. Displays are in order, window glass is clean and free of fingerprints, etc. Even if customers don't necessarily state "wow, your store is so clean" they'll be drawn to your store for that reason. Check out the competition, more often than not, they're not up to that standard. That is how you can set yourself apart and be noticed.

Marketing is very difficult I know on a limited or zero budget, but there are options. In most cities or towns, there are newspapers or magazines that have style sections, talking about the newest stores or latest trends, etc.
Make sure to send a press release, just a simple paragraph and picture if available, of the newest item to the editor or writer at the publication. It's free and a great source of exposure.
Cross promote your business with businesses where your potential customer frequents. Yoga studios, fitness centers, daycare centers, grocery stores, etc. Leave flyers for their customers to pick up and offer to hand out flyers for them as well with your customers.
It can cost a bit of money, but consider joining the Chamber of Commerce if you have one in your area. Some less expensive options (or free) are a merchants association, network through a small business owners group, a group of women-owned businesses, etc. Do an internet search for your area to see what exists. Good luck!

Have a sale. Increase your price and have 25% off sales of the increase price. People love baby cloth so put baby cloth in the window.

How about organize your shopping window by choosing a similar series of color for each day/season. Coz for most of the baby/children's clothes shop, the window is always to colorful and will make customers feel dizzy. If I pass by a baby's clothes shop everyday on my way home and will come across an orange window for monday, green for Tuesday, blue for Wed...something like that, most probably I will go in one day.

Try Yellowbook, people search for baby stuff a lot, and they'll find your place at yellowbook.com locally.

And put something cute on window!
