They want me to do billing and collection, plus contracts and

Sounds like they want you to be an independent contractor. That means 15.3% of your income will be paid to the IRS as self employmnet taxes. Usually consultants get paid more rather than less when working for their old company. If the work is too much you might need to hire someone to do part of it. That presents another set of expenses.

JACHO???

Billy Shat
Go to monster.com and do research on how much people in this profession should make.

Andrea
Paul J made some excellent points, one of which I'd like to stress: The company's cost when you were an employee is about double what they were paying you. This is due to various payroll taxes, etc. If you work for them as a consultant, you are going to have to set yourself up as a business and there is a lot that comes along with that.

If you quit your job because you didn't like the work or the company, then I think you should decline this offer. If you like the work and don't mind setting up the business (and managing all that goes along witht that), then give it a shot. My guess is that you'd need to charge approximately double what they were paying you but you'd need to look into the regulations for businesses in your area to determine any extra taxes you might have to pay.

Good luck.

nk
Look Ahead, for some thing better, some where else. You are quitting for a reason or reasons. Respect, your self.

What is JACHO? Where is JACHO?

I agree with Billy ~ go to Monster.com to check the average pay for this position. You should be asking for MORE as a consultant (just my opinion here).... They are getting off easy because you are no longer an employee ~ no more matching your FICA, no more benefits, etc.

Did You Get That Memo?
Shame on them!

ASk for more money than your previous job

i am sorry but it does not sound like they are looking for a consultant ,a consultant work normally come and just do check and balances to make sure that everything is be ran the proper way. it sounds to me like that are wanting you to be a sub contractor for them . that fell your skills are needed for this job, so instead of replacing you they are asking you to work for yourself doing to same job .which kinda gives you as advantage . as others have said two times your wage ,i was also tell them that your experiences will be an add charge and paid on a weakly or monthly bases
and as far as what your experiences are you may want to get with an accountant and get a list of what you can charge for and what would be better to use as write offs at end year.

Take your previous hourly rate and tack on enough to cover all of the benefits you will lose as a contract employee, e.g. cost of health insurance, etc., and that should be your base. Checking Monster is a good double check, but that will only show the salary being paid, not the cost of benefits.

Santhosh
you can be their consultant .even after leaving the job they are calling , that means you were performed there very well. u just decide your fee by % of their profit .it is better for u

There's no set answer. Whatever they will pay? ;)

A small tip though: The standard rule corporations use to figure the cost of an employee is: employee pay times 2.
That covers insurance, matching contributions, paperwork, facilities, etc.

Facilities and overhead are hidden costs, don't forget them when you do your 'figuring'.

You can break some of that out and use it for negotiation.
Example: If you will be printing out 100 pages a day, avg total cost per page is about 7.5 cents (5 per page, plus initial cost and maintenance over 1M pages).
So, tell them you'll be happy to print 100 pages a day for them, at a cost of 8 cents a page, or they can accept email, or they can provide a flat rate per day, every day for a certain number of pages with compensation over that number.

It really sounds like they simply wanted to cut your pay. Cut them right back. :)

viajero_intergalactico
As a consultant you would have to charge 2 or 3 times what they paid you as an employee. You also would work on your own terms (otherwise you'll still be their employee).

As a self-employed consultant YOU will be responsible for the extra tax, not them.

I have read stories in the Los Angeles Times of people who were in office at LAUSD getting paid $120,000 a year. Then when they lost the position they became consultants and worked a lot less and got paid $500,000 a year by this one employee. And then they got other consulting jobs for mega bucks and still had tons of free time.

A quick and easy approach is usually around 1.5-2.5 times the hourly rate for that position.

You should first try to determine what your hourly rate for each: billing, collection, and contracts. I am sure they do not weigh in the same. Then when you work each task you charge the hourly rate times the number of hours you worked that task.

However, I would suggest you do your homework to see what each task would pay on a hourly rate then present that to your employer so they know up front what you will bill them for your labor.

The fact that they are offering you less suggests that you may have approached them looking for work.

Well, that situation does suggest they offer a bit less than you were getting... since you already know your old pay was fully competitively priced.

It is also a form of warning to other employees tempted to try this maneuver if they pay you less.

You need to negotiate a price for a variety of tasks. Things that are worth more to them to have you do should be paid more. You adjust those rates periodically if they are tossing you too many low-value jobs.

At the same time you need to be selective in what tasks you accept, and keep other 'customers' for your services who will offer you more valuable work. This process is what working as an independent is about.

david42
You certainly can work as a consultant. You want a specific contract detailing what you will perform and what the reimbursement will be. Take a look at the government site below for some rate information.

bernel1403
Guess you were an asset to them but they see your quitting as a way to make even more money. I would certainly not take less since you did quit for a reason and as others have said your wages are not the only expense you'd be saving them. Health insurance is COSTLY. Being your own boss is costly, you'd have to set up a ton of business related paperwork that you may not have time to take care of yourself even if you know how, so you'd need to pay for that. Any other perks you got, pension, ira etc...
Also, would you work from home? From your computer, your phone? Will you be happy?

Why did you quit this job, was it a person or the company policy?

I would not be so eager to work for a company that I quit?? It sounds like you are confused, maybe you put your cart before the horse. In other words--did you think about how you were going to support yourself without this job??

Gudsud55
You have decided to quit, for reason(s). So think of some thing else. However, if you are inclined to take up the same job on contract, as a Contractor or as a Consultant, the same has to be remunerative.

You must think like a entrepreneur. Details, may be worked out in consultation with CA, and Agreement in consultation with your advocate. You must have at least one each of advocate and CA, fixed up for your self as an 'entrepreneur'.

With all the Best.

As a consultant, you get what a company feels that your services are worth to them.

However, as a consultant, you are no longer an employee of that company and if you are as good as you think you are, then you are free to market your services to other companies... including your former employer's competition.

Other companies may be willing to pay you much more to get their foot in the door of a new lucrative contract.

As far as what to charge as a consultant... there is a low, medium, and high range for fees. Consultants that can command and get the high fees are those that have proven themselves and firms know what they can do for their bottom line.

It does not appear that you have proven yourself as a consultant yet, built up credibility, successful track record, or a name or brand for yourself. You can not venture into any area as an unknown and command, and expect to get top dollar.

Only when you have some experienced years or a good portfolio of success under your belt... can you command and get top consulting fees.

Ironically what your former employer offers you is an indication of what they felt you were worth to them as an employee, and you were not irreplaceable. They existed well before you came along, and will continue to do so long after you're gone.

Your former employer more than likely has current internal personnel they can split the required tasks among and get the job done without additional expenses or payroll. Your former employer saw you as just an employee during your tenure with them, and it is very difficult for them to look upon you as an expert all of a sudden that they can not get along without.

I know this all may sound a little negative to you, but these are the hard cold facts you have to face. Good luck to you on your new venture as a consultant and I wish you much prosperity and success.

Check this out BigDreamsComeTrue.com. It may be of help to you. I got started 6 months ago. I left my job in my first month and have been earning a substantial income ever since. Cheers

enjoying my newborn
you can charge a helll of a lot more money since they are not paying employee taxes, unemployment insurance OR health insurance for you. My husband is an RF engineer and when he was hire by his company they were paying him about 5,000 a month but when he left and became a contractor (and a consultant) companies were willing to pay 11,000 (and that was a low number) so do your research and submit your offer. If they don't accept they will counter offer you a lower number and you go from there and negotiate.
DO NOT SELL YOURSELF SHORT. Is it worth it to give them a lower number in exchange for your family's time with you?

do your research and check online what each charges and go from there.
