Congratulations on your desire to better your situation- as well as recognizing that education is one of the first steps.
Nobody can tell you what to do- or which business is "best"
I have friends who are multimillionaires in real estate, others are rich from MLM, still others are investors, and my friend Rusty is a florist. I like many thing about mlm- but it's not for me-I prefer real estate and other business/investing models.
It's hard to give specific answers to general questions but here are a few fundamentals-
1. Decide exactly what you want. How much do you want to earn , how many hours do you want to work, etc. Find the most successful examples of this business and STUDY them. Find a way to improve the product, it's marketing, price, quality, or?? Find a specific problem within this product group that's not currently being addresed- and create a solution.
Always think first in terms of what your consumer wants and needs- then give it to them while making a profit.
2.Make a list of your skills, passions, and interests. Think of ways to incorporate them into a business. It's a lot easier to put in the time building a business that you care about.
3.If you've found something you want to do but don't have much time or money- do what I did- Find someone to be a mentor. I decided I wanted to learn to be a real estate investor.I had no car, no money and was homeless. What I did have was plenty of time (lol) and a strong desire to do something to improve myself.
I sent letters to 5 strangers offering to work for free- in exchange for learning their secrets. 2 took me up on it with pay and an apartment! I learned how to find a property with hundreds of thousands of dollars of profit potential- and find someone to loan me the money to buy it
Successful people are usually glad to help people who are willing to help themselves-and even more willing to help if it helps them..
4.Hang out with the people you want to become like. Know someone successful? Offer to take them to lunch in exchange for asking them questions. (I've never had anyone let me pay yet- and have gotten investors, friends, and valuable advice from all)
5.Websites,Authors, etc- when I was 15 I was homeless. It was winter and I hung out in the library on days I couldn't find work. I started reading books on success/investing/etc. That was 11 years ago- my life has changed dramatically! Read 1 hour EVERY day on something that will help you.

Well I work a full time job 40 hours + a week, plus I coach cheerleading which is about 3 more hours. I run a home based business, so I spend between 30 minutes - 1 hour a day, sometimes, not even that. I make between $500-$1000 a month. I am not a good example of what can be done part time in this company, but I am one. |

I'm sure more people can answer with additional details, but here are some basics you'd need if you were in California:
-If you're selling goods, you have to get a Resellers Permit from the State Board of Equalization (at least in California). If you sell things, you'll need to charge customers sales tax or pay the sales tax yourself. You have to file like monthly or quarterly sales statements.
-If you want to have a company name, instead of your own personal name, you have to file a Ficticious Business Name statement (a "DBA"=Doing Business As) and run a legal notice in the newspaper. (Note: you will get a lot of junk mail after you do this! Lots of people watch those for business mailing lists.)
-You have to have a Business License for the city you live in. Call your City Hall and they will help you get the information you need for a home business. Some cities require you to have a dedicated room (or at least "space") to conduct business in. They also list what kinds of businesses are allowed to run out of a home, some places also have rules like you can't run a pornography website, for example. A lot of cities in the Los Angeles area will not allow you to run a business out of home if customers come to you.
-You'll need to open a bank account if you're doing business as a name. Even if you're doing your business under your own name, it's wise to open a separate account strictly for your business to help with bookkeeping.
-IRS: If you're a Sole Proprietorship, I don't hink you need to file for a Taxpayer ID number. I think you just use your own personal SSN (They have an 800 number you can call to ask for sure.) If you make a certain amount, you have to file quarterly estimated taxes. (Call or go online and request loads of their forms and read them.)
-State Tax: check on your state for tax rules.
-Website: you might want to register any variation of your business name or initials as a website address. You also should do a thorough web search to see other companies which have the same name or similar names. For example, even if your last name was Nissan and you were a mechanic, you cannot run a business as "Nissan Motors". You'd be sued and lose!
There's more, it's been awhile. I wish you lots of luck. Use that enthusiasm to keep yourself motivated when you have to do the humdrum legal filing stuff. :) |

As a comment, it's difficult to take part-time businesses seriously. I realize you probably need the income from the full-time position, but you will likely be more successful (more motivated) if this your own business is a full time endeavor. |
