shrapnel chimp | I unknowingly fed my employees tainted popcorn. What should I do? |
I recently purchased a second hand popcorn machine as an incentive for the employees at my office. After making a few batches and handing them out throughout the office I began to notice that something wasn't right. The machine was leaving a large number of kernels unpopped and was also making a strange gurgling noise. Upon inspection I found that there was a dead rat stuck in the tube that distributes the oil to the pan where the corn is popped. Judging by the state of the rat it had been there for a long time. I don't feel like I should use the machine anymore (even with the rat removed), but I don't know how to explain to my employees why I am getting rid of their reward right after I brought it in. What should I do? |

You haven't been working hard enough so I'm taking this away!!! |

You should tell them the machine was contaminated, and contact a clinic to test them for whatever diseases they could have gotten, and you would be responsible for payment for that.
Then, buy a brand new popcorn machine. |

since u put them in danger they can sue u, so either u ignore, it or apologize. give raises or more luxury. they probably wont get sick because the cooking and heat will kill disease (though im not sure) be more careful, its ur responsibility to be the boss. bring them for a clinic testing and admin ur wrong doing. |

OK. If it were me, I would feel horrible. However, no matter how much I wanted to tell them the truth, in this situation I would have to ignore my better judgment and wait to see if anyone reported becoming ill as a result. If one person did, I still would resist saying anything. But...if several people did, then I would tell them I "just" inspected the machine and then I would apologize profusely along with my admission of the truth. As far as getting rid of the machine, I would just simply say that it broke and will be replaced...then get off your cheap a** (just kidding - I am a thrifty chick) and buy a new one: and by "new" I mean 100% new and 100% rat-free. ***As a side note, consider the greusome death that our poor rat friend had to experience in the popcorn maker tube. :( |

I know the first instinct is to keep your mouth shut because you might be scared of someone getting angry, but really the best thing you can do is be honest about what happened, explain that the machine has been cleaned, and ask what the employees would like to do. If you don't tell the employees about the rat, it's highly possibly several of them will get very sick (whereas if you'd told them about it, they'd have known to go to a doctor if they were worried) and also gives them the right to sue the company if they find out that you knew about it and didn't tell them the moment you found out. If you have a good relationship with your employees, this will understand that the mistake was not your fault, and if they decide they do not want the machine you can always purchase a new one (the smaller machines are relatively inexpensive brand new). |

Speak with your attorney about your legal exposure. Buy a new popcorn machine. |

ewwwww. Well once again it goes to show...a good deed never goes unpunished.
Man you are in a pickle. If you do "the right thing" and admit everything, your employees are going to be upset with you for "cheaping out" and buying a used unit that wasn't properly cleaned. Plus they will feel nauseous, whether or not it is physical in origin.
First, I'd throw that machine straight into the dumpster and replace it with a brand-new unit. And then, I hate to say it, but I think if I was you I'd only explain that you discovered that the old one had a defect that made it incapable of making good popcorn.
But if someone gets sick, confess to all immediately.
Another thought - Seriously, you should contact your county health department and see what they recommend. Who knows what vile bacteria could have been transmitted to your employees. You need to get this question cleared up from an expert - and I don't mean any old general practitioner. |

Keep serving it until they figure it out then get new employees. |

Well it is a complete judgment call on your part ( but don't ever mess with Karma), if someone is getting sick, then you should tell everyone that ate this popcorn what happened. Next a buy a brand new machine, and paying for it out of your own pocket because if it was a reward for them, you would be sending the wrong message taking it away without explaining as to what happened. |
