returnofkarlos | I want to build my own website for .co.uk company.what's the best way to go about it? |
I've seen the free ones on offer but you have to have things like .biz or.futureweb.co.uk on the end. I have a website name but not sure how to go about building one! |

You can always set up a redirecting site that is free. I saw one once that was somthing like: testsite.com then that would redirect to a site that was made with a free site builder like googlepages.com.
I have a website made with googlepages: http://www.ebay.tracking.googlepages.com/ It is REALLY guick and easy!
So what I mean is that I could create a url like ebay.tracking.com that would redirect to ebay.tracking.googlepages.com. All for free. |

You need hosting. We recommend 1&1, just because we have used it for about 5 years and have had no probs. But I am sure there are others as good. You need to design yor website on paper. You then need to code it. We use Alleycode and are now using CMS Made simple (for content management). Don't use word, dreamweaver etc.If you start off with the right coding it will pay dividends in the future. You also need to get seen by the search engines. You can use adsense, but don't go overboard, you are just giving away traffic.
First and foremost you need to concentrate on building up visitors, this is the hard part. On some sites interesting, ORIGINAL, articles may do the trick. Once you get visitors you need to keep them on your site and you need them to return. This is up to you how you do this. But concentrate on this initially, don't even think about making money at this stage, think about how you can invest money to make your site successful. Use a visitor logging service. We use Statcounter; It is excellent and free. Once you have added their code to your pages you can participate in their Forums, which have a wealth of information. Be prepared for a lot of time & effort, initially with little reward. By all means contact us at http://www.shareworld.co.uk
If you look at http://www.shareworld.co.uk/thanks.htm there are links to the people whou have helped and also a link to how our home page looked when we started (Terrible!) |

Hi there. You are right to avoid the dodgy domain names as they take away any credibility you will get from your site. People won't look at something that is basically built on a free platform. Similarly get rid of yahoo, hotmal and gmail addresses for business. Best use something like http://www.octopusinternet.com There is a great program there called website tonight which will get you a site in an hour or two, you will also get an email name @yourdomain.co.uk and I think there is also hosting included. It's less than £3 per month for a small site and the support is great. I've used it for a few things and they have excellent help guides too if you are just learning how to do it all. Good luck, and I hope this has been of some help. |

It all really depends on how unique you want the design to be.
Dreamweaver is great for building your own website from scratch but it does help to know about CSS and HTML.
If we can help at all feel free to contact me via my profile page |

It all depends on the level of technical knowledge you have as this can be a minefield.
There are several companies around such as Dreamweaver and Freewebs (they charge). There are also a number of web sites offering advice. Some of these give links to other sites and you are really able to research this subject very deeply, so while all this information is free - make the most of it.
Take your time, don't rush into anything you will come to regret in a week or two. Think what you really need. what level of support you want. What are your own capabilities in designing, html etc.,
Far better to give this a weeks thought than rush into something, be committed either by a contract or wasting time on a comparatively free service which will not meet your needs in the future. There are so many things to consider - will you need an email service from your web site to you, will you need an auto responder as your business grows? Don't fall into the temptation of putting a counter on your site - this is just too amateurish. Use the professional and free services of Alexa instead.
So do your own research, try to envisage your business and how it might grow over the next two years, and then you will be in more of a position to make an accurate decision.
Not for the moment but fur the future.
Wishing you the very best of luck - you are entering a fascinating and interesting world. |

Does the company that you have your domain with provide web hosting? Usually there's an extra fee, although sometimes it's included with your first year's domain name. They'll give you something called your 'ftp' which is what you need for uploading your web pages.
Depending on what you want your site to do for you, you can start off by using programmes like Microsoft Word or Publisher to write your site. We wrote our first site using Publisher and people accessed it as an on-line brochure and contacted us to buy our services.
Now we use Adobe Go Live, which is very similar to Dreamweaver, another professional choice. Draw the structure of your site on paper first, before starting to write it. That way you can work out what pages you want/need and the levels in your site.
There are many options for adding in autoresponders and on-line shops at very low cost.
The way you write your site makes a big difference to how it's seen by the search engines. This is achieved through headings on your pages, your meta tags, key words and alt tags.
Please feel free to contact me for more information. Website writing doesn't have to be complicated to be effective. One of our sites comes up first or second on searches for its products and we're selling goods through its on-line shop.
Business Link also provide courses on writing and getting the best from your website.
Good luck! |

If you want something easy to use try squarespace .com there is a free 30 day trial and the cheap option is about $6 a month after that. Although it will be a bit more if you want to use the url you have bought.
This will only be any good for very simple uses but with a bit of tweaking you can do a fair bit. |
