College can give you the basics of economics (supply and demand) and marketing, but you won't learn how to acquire and run a business there.
You need a mentor and experience. Figure out what you are passionate about and see if there is a market for it. |

Sure, but you need the cash and know how to run a store... At the age of 19 i doubt you have cash and the knowledge of running a store. Good Luck |

Of course you can. Many, many people started a business without college. Look at Henry Ford. Robert Kiyosaki is VERY rich. I recently listened to an audio by him in which he states that business people do not care about your grades or schooling, they care about your financials.
If you have a dream, don't let anyone take it away from you... just go out there and make it happen.

Well some of those answers aren't very encouraging!! I commend you your ambition! If you read the histories of some of America's greatest entrepreneurs, they all had one thing in common and that was an uncommon ambition to do something that would serve others. Ray Kroc, Dave Thomas, Bill Gates to name a few. College education isn't required but good business practices are usually learned, not instinctive. You will have many challenges to overcome but don't allow your ambition to die at your first step of faith. |

It certainly is possible. But you're going to need a lot of money to start your own store. And you're probably going to have trouble finding people to give you money, considering you have no education on running a business.
If you want to succeed, write a business plan (look up how to write a business plan on-line, or buy an entrepreneurial book). You'll need a pretty good support team too, you don't want to actually succeed in your business to find out later down the road that you did your taxes wrong, or have done something illegal.
I could keep going on, because there are a million things to take care of in opening your own business, but if you don't want to go to college, do your best to educate yourself, read a lot of books, and figure out how it works, then start building some capital.
If you have a truly innovative idea for a store, and you really want to succeed, there's no reason you shouldn't. |

I don't think you need college to start your own business. College doesn't give you anything extra except a piece of paper saying that you have a degree (and that "experience"). You can learn without going to college, but you might need more motivation. If there are business concepts that you want to learn, maybe accounting, etc., you can learn that from the library, bookstore, and using a lot of self-motivation. Your biggest hurdle may be coming up with the initial investment to start your store. |

There is no specific requirement relating store ownership and higher education - however it's not a bad idea to learn about small business operations, marketing, accounting, management, and a host of other important business topics - at a college - before opening your store. |

if you're on your own. |

James Casey started UPS when he was your age. Of course he started by delivering on bicycle. Times have changes its a little more complicated on getting a business started. You are young enough to have plenty of time to go to college and learn how to run a business well. It's VERY hard to get people that you need, investors, banks, vendors, ect. to take you seriously if you don't have a college degree. Take your time and don't rush this. It will be a very big change just moving out of your house and it takes money and credit. Credit is something that takes time to build. You will definately own your own shop one day if you are willing to work hard and do what it takes to get there. Even if it means waiting for the right time and getting an education. |
