I would like to have a retail store and hold monthly workshops. I know what my market is and I've even seen some places that I would like to lease. I need to know more about the business end.
I have no idea who I would present my ideas to or what exactly I need to know. I have heard about getting loans and grants to start a business and I would like to know what kind of information I'd need to have to be able to apply for that. You certainly seem to have given it considerable thought. Why not actually talk to someone who runs a retail sex shop and pick their brains for advice? Ask what works for them and what doesn't...people's setbacks can be very instructive, too. It might be a good idea to ask someone who won't view you as a competitor, though, so you may have to go to another town just to talk to them. On the other hand, you may so impress whoever you talk to that they may offer you a job on the spot. That way, you could learn the business, maybe even work your way up to management. Good luck. |

with the advent of online ordering
who wants to go to a sex shop?
sure there is condom revolution
they have a few shops
and the occasional lingere with adult dvd / novelties
but you never get a sex shop placed in a primo location
as you get all sorts of opposition ( legal and otherwise ) even if you do have the right to get the shop located
it's a good thing you do know your target market
but if you go with this venture
your better off with no signage and a bland exterior to pull off this type of venture, |

You need to come up with a business plan if you are after loans or a grant. The business plan will show all information about property lease, stock purchases, staff costs, operating expenses , and projections (estimates) of sales. If any of that information can be compared to an existing site thats a plus.
You need to know the laws regarding who can be admitted to what areas of the shop, what can be publicly displayed , what you need to do to verify age before allowing entry and any mandated clearances between your shop and residential area, schools or other locations. (that will be state, county or city ordinances)
When you know how much money you need , you have your proposal summary, one page , and you go see your bank manager.
You need to plan on operating for at least three months with no income , maybe more.
You may be able to get some information from product distributors or a trade association . Franchise would be another option.
You need to be careful about workshops in terms of local prostitution and obscenity laws
Your public library should have books on business startup planning. The process is the same for any business , only details are different. |
