I will be a high school principal soon. I would also like to open a BBQ shop. How could I be successful?
I would like to progress from assistant principal to principal and possibly assitant superintendant. I also have a great love for food. I love to cook. I am 33 yrs old. I would like to have a small barbecue business. I would lke to be successful at both. My delima is how could I do both or should I wait until my school career is over. I do not want to look back on life and saying I wish that I have done this or that. Thanks!

It sounds like you're trying to take a LOT at one time.

Wait until your school career is over or even until you get settled as a principal first. Don't dive into a costly business venture until you know you can succeed as a principal first.

open the BBQ restaurant next to the school that u are going to work so students will buy from u

I would not recommend doing both at the same time. A BBQ shop would take up nearly ALL of your free time for a year or two. Four out of 5 new restaurants fail, and that's usually due to lack of capital.
I imagine a principal or superintendant makes good money. I would save for retirement when you could open the BBQ place to supplement your income. Restaurants can be fun, but they are like young children: very demanding.
Look up your states small business bureau. They have tips on loans and resources to help you get started.

restaurants are A LOT OF WORK!!!!!!!
its a full time business until it takes off and you can hire people you trust to take it over.

what do you love more? are you willing to make the risk? ask yourself first.

Owning a business is a headache full of customer's complaints & trying to get something free. I would concentrate on the Principal career first. At least kids can go home. W/ a business, it becomes your home so to speak.

You and I need to become Friends..I need someone that I can talk to or share my experiences and fears once I start my vice-principal/principla Journey. I am 32 and Will start my intership this comming year. I also love to cook, but baking is my stuff..I want to eventually open a bakery...
I dont think that we will know until we are actually in the possition..
I know that it will be time consuming and we might have to put those dreams aside at least for the first few years while we are learning to become administrators...
Take Care and Good Luck

No school would appoint someone to a top position when he already runs his own small business. Both jobs require extremely long weeks (as you know) and it wouldn't be wise to try and do both. You'd likely fail at both, or look back on life and wish you hadn't worked so much.

That being said, if you have summers off, perhaps you could start your business then. Get it up and running before you have to be back at the school job.

Open "the Bar-B-Que Principal" and continue in your career. you will need to hire people you can trust and help you with your vision. You would not have time to do justice to both jobs so your challenge is honing your HR skills.

Where are you going to find the time? Doing both at the same time will be extremely difficult. I am a teacher and I just opened up my own gourmet casserole company. Dealing with all the permits and health department was a bear. Trusting anyone to run your business properly (from the cash to the cook) while you are gone is nearly impossible too. Are you planning on having a family? There goes what little spare time you have. I know your duties at school will only increase as you progress. Either get a business partner who you can trust with your life or save your money for your dream and wait until you can spend more time nuturing it and enjoying it!

oh wow thats a weird combo.
Just start cooking for the kids at lunch time. Im sure they would love weenies and burgers on the grill everyday! Or you could have a small BBQ stand on the weekends in your city.

At the school develop a theme/club/classwork around Culinary arts, restaurant hospitality/management.

Invite students/parents to do cook-offs get lots of free labor & advertising and work up a customer base.

It sounds like a sure thing.

Running any business, especially a restaurant is a more than full time job.

You are young. Do very well at being a principal and then do the restaurant later.
