Ranimi23 r | I work as software engineer. Can I build my own web site without being fired? |
I am going to open my own web site and also write there a column, but I'm afraid my boss won't like this hobby. It will be a big application and I will need to work on it on my spare time. I like my work and I like also to program outside my work. Can I do that or it will be talking a big risk?
I don't want to hide this web site, because I do believe it will be a great success, I just don't know if this collide with my work. I do progarm web sites at my work, but not like what I am planning to do.
This web site may be some day a real company, I don't know what will happen but I love the idea of doing it. Please advise how to behave. I do know big companies started from people who had worked while they started their own thing. |

Yeah, ask your boss.
There is such a thing in business law called "No Compete Clause" or something like that. What it means is, basically, if you worked for Coca Cola, you couldn't open your own cola factory using Coke's demographics tests (what the people were thirsty for), product ingredients, or, anything similar to what they are doing. The law usually asks that an employer get you to sign a contract with such a clause in it, but, if you didn't sign anything with such a clause in it, if the company you work for could prove you used their resources to promote your own products they'd get you.
Just ask your boss and tell him you are gonna do it on your own time and use your own resources. Tell him you'll show him the site.
Maybe you'll get a raise out of it--not to do it...maybe he'll want to invest. You never know. |

I don't think your boss will mind, as long as it doesn't interfere with your job, and doesn't criticize your boss or his company. |

It depends... If your boss is fine with it, go for it. If not, try doing bits on your lunch break. If he still discourages what you do on your lunch break, get a laptop and do it outside. You can do work-safe columns that doesn't create a rivalry (e.g. avoid doing a website about software coding or even say... C++, VB, etc.)
If you're a slacker like me, also make sure your IT admin doesn't have a firewall/monitoring software (some monitoring software ARE pretty stealth though; watch out). Since you said you do program web sites, you can BS and say it IS for a client.
For myself, I did small snippets of offline code while working as a travel agent while starting my own biz, but continued at home. Since I have other projects in life my website is temporarily on hold, but I still have my own business. |

If the site makes money or infringes on the company in any way and you signed a moonlighting clause when you started there, then I think you could be fired. But if it's just a hobby or for charity, it's usually ok. Definitely talk to your boss and lay out exactly what you want to do and what you hope to accomplish with the site. Emphasize that you won't be working on it during work hours and that you won't be using company resources. If you were given an employee handbook, read through it and see if there's any information that can help. |

The best thing to do is ask your boss if you can providing you promise to carry on working for him he will say yes |

Ask your boss, then there will be no gray area. |

There is absolutely no conflict. Regardless of what your job is, they can not control what you choose to do in your free time. The only drawback is you can not code something the company is asking you to code for them nor can you disclose personal company information as that would be abusing your position in the company. Other than that, any projects you have, is 100% yours and you are free to do so. |

Why would he be mad, if it isn't interfering with your work he should be fine. |

Yes! Your boss can't stop you doing that, it's your own spare time. |

ofcause you can, it's great that you got such a big thinking.
as long as this doesn't affact your work, then this should be fine.
if you really unsure, you can ask your boss " do you think it's ok to build my own web site? will you fire me if i do this??"
if you boss say NO, then you can just say you are joking,
(but do it secretly haha, then one day when you success, then you will earn big bucks, and you can quit this job~~ right? )
hope for your success~
dont' forget me when you get rich |

no way. especially if it involves money. are you crazy?
der. you might approach him as a business proposition but that isn't what you asked.
i assumed you meant on the server at work.
if it's your own resources on your own time just don't mix the two. i wouldn't mention my work for the company on the site maybe. |
