If he's the boss then why can't he? Unless it's addressed specifically to you and states that it's private then I don't see it as breaking the law. |

You forget its not your mail it is the companies mail if addressed to the firm for your attention as an employee, of course he has the right. The only exception would be if it was marked `personal ' and then if he read it you could complain to him that it is not acceptable behaviour. |

any company can legally open mail with thier postal address on the envelope(no matter whom it may be addressed to!) may i suggest you do not have sensitive mail sent to your work place. my boss opens the mail addressed to me and it drives me mad! |

Unless the envelope is marked 'Private And Confidential' your boss or any other member of staff HAS GOT the right to open and read your mail. |

Yes, perfectly.
You should not have any private mail delivered to work and all post relating to the business will be opened by the boss as its the only way to make sure any important cheques/invoices/contracts etc don't go missing either deliberatly or accidentally.
Further to all the above, you should not have personal mail delivered to work, all the mail received at work is not personal but business and therefor owned by the boss.
It is in the same way the at work, the IT department will have full access to your incoming/outgoing emails. |

why not? Unless it is addressed specifically to you in which case he/she is breaking the law. |

Amazing; almost all of the answers here are completely wrong
Any and all Mail, e-mails and documents that are created or received by the business or company is the property of the business or company, not the individual.
As you are part of the company, then the incoming mail is at option of your boss to open.
If you don't want him opening your mail, then have it sent to your house. |

If it is addressed to you personally and not to the business then no, he must not open your mail. It is a criminal offence to interfere with the post! |

What mail? Post mail or e-mails? When there's mail in the letterbox and it's addressed to the company with your name underneath the company's name then he can open whatever he wants to open. If it's private letters - then no! Talk to him. |

If you are in the UK then he is breaking the law. The post is the property of the person it is addressed to. (same goes for wrongly delivered mail. In theory you are not supposed to open it, just send it back. In practice however ...) |

Never! In that mail could be confidential infomation for your eyes only personal and professional! You must gather some fellow employees and talk to your boss! |

In the U.S it's considered a federal offense to open any mail that is not directly addressed to you. That's a hell of a law to break. |

No. Tampering with someone else's mail is a federal offense. |

When you say your mail , is it private and personal? If so it should not be addressed to your office. It is reasonable for the owner or boss of a company to assume that the mail being delivered to the company premises is relating to the company's business and that he is free to open the mail.If a particular envelope is clearly marked for the personal attention of one of the employees, the boss should not open it but give it to the staff member and instruct him to ensure that further personal mail is not addressed to the company premises.Personal mail not m,arked as private can be opened. Again a warning should be given if the mail has nothing to do with the company or it's business. There is no reason for private mail to be sent to a place of work. Most companies I have worked for have stated that it a breach of company rules. |

It is a Federal Offense. An invasion of privacy. I would confront the boss & even say it is a Federal Offense. You could file a police report & the boss could be arrested. Of course, if you make a big deal, you could be fired. Instead, go to the Post Office & get a PO Box & stop receiving mail at your job. |

In most businesses mail is processed by a clerk or secretary, opened and stamped with a received date etc. before it is routed to the person it is addressed to or the person who handles whatever the mail concerns. The only exception normally is something to an executive marked personal and/or confidential. In this case possibly because it is a small business the boss is handling that function. You should not be having personal mail come to your work address. Therefore all mail coming there should be about the business. What concerns the business concerns the boss.
My own practice as director of a nonprofit and as a former business owner is that we don't do that and if the time comes when I can not trust someone to handle whatever appropriately the time has come when we don't need to work together, but I realize that ours is not the usual policy. The exception in our ministry is when someone who works away from the office in donor develoopment has told us to be expecting a donation from such and such co. When that envelope comes we do open it and deposit the check and let person know it came. These envelopes typically contain only the check no corrospondence.
Since you know that mail is opened make a point not to have anything of a personal nature coming there. If there are things that for some reason you don't want to come to your home address.Post Office boxes are inexpensive. |

I would have thought, that if the mail is specifically addressed to you, it would still be against the law for someone else to open it. |

Is it work related? If so, he has a right to view all correspondence. If it is of a private nature, certainly not, but then you should have it delivered to your home address and this won't happen.
In a larger company all mail would be opened and date stamped by a receptionist or admin staff. |

Why does it matter? You shouldn't be getting personal mail at work. What are you wanting to hide from your boss? |

Legal or not - um how about trust and team building? You don't need that kind of stress in the workplace - he's clearly not a very smart boss otherwise he'd understand the importance of trust to improve morale and productivity. |

Anyone who opens mail that their name is not on, and doesn't have express permission from the person's whose name is on it, is breaking the law. Even if someone's mail comes to your house and you open it, you are breaking the law. It's something about the mail is the queen's property until the addressee has it. |

If the mail is addressed to you specifically then no they are not allowed to open it.
This breaches confidentiality and privacy rules, they can hold your mail until you are together then watch you open it if they think you are abusing the work address and recieving inappropriate material. However they must have good cause to do this as that would be a form of harrasment if they have no just cause.
Firstly I would speak to your local Union Rep (if you have one), if not speak to your Manager and indicate by letter your feeling about there invasion of your privacy, if that fails seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau as to further action that can be taken.
Quite frankly if the Mail is non work related, get it redirected to your own home or mailbox where you can pick it up without interferance.
Good luck |
