IT DEPENDS ON WHAT IT SAYS IN YOUR CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT.IF IT SAYS ,YOU WILL WORK OVERTIME WHEN REQUIRED,THEN YOU ARE LEGLESS,IF IT DOES NOT ,THEN THEY CANNOT FORCE YOU TO WORK,BUT THEY MAY REQUEST/ASK YOU TO.IF YOU REFUSE,BEAR IN MIND ,THIS IS THE REAL WORLD.THEY MAY HAVE A PENALTY CLAUSE ON A JOB COMPLETION,YOUR CHOICE,YOUR JOB.

depends on what is in the contract. if it say something along the lines of being required to work weekends when needed then yes, but on the other hand, if you are not available, what can they do? for example you have a club or you see your sick dad on a sunday, something like that. they cannot fire you for this.

you could always ask to swap a day round say take friday off and work a sunday. should be more money on sunday too.

zyberianwarrior
wah wah wah I can imagine what you will say if you have to work "Holiday hours"

YES THEY CAN!

snohoney2
you need to check your contract but yes i think that your employers are allowed to make you work sundays....i work in retail as well & if you're full-time you have to work 1 Sunday out of every 6...However, i think they're obliged to pay you extra to work Sundays....

In UK law no-one can be forced to work on Sunday (or on their Holy day if not Christian). You may only have to work on Sunday if you signed a contract that specified you would work on Sunday.

chimp
its all in your contract what they expect of you..i got caught out the same and jacked my job in...i dont do weekends for no one..i only work for them not live with them.I did try my best to get out of it but the contract ties you in

Phone ACAS,look for it in the phone directory, they tell you all your employment rights,it does all depend on what your contract says though.

If it says any 5 over 7,that means any 5 days a week, but if it says mon-fri,they can't without changing your contract, which they can do if they give you 3 months notice they are going to do it.

But to be sure phone ACAS.

Hello Chris,
Check your contract of employment, as these are always in your employers favour and weighted against the employee, but in the wording of them it looks like it is a fair contract, but they never are... First point, is your Monday to Friday work regarded as a full week, viz, 40 hours.. if so then you have the right to work the other days as overtime, and you should be paid an enhanced rate for the time worked, like time and a half for Satuday and double time for Sunday.
The Contract of employment will put upon you hat you have to be flexible in your preparedness, to work unsocial hours too. This also qualities you for an unsocial hours payment to be included in your wages, and if you are under 18, they cannot insist that you work any overtime in their trying to get you to work any overtime and you cannot work shiftwork anyway, not until you are 18 that is. Beyond that age, even with a contract of employment, the Employer can almost get away with anything and everything he wants to with you and your working hours....
Now for the Good stuff in your favour... is there a Union that applies to you and the job you do, are you trained up for the work you do, if the is a Union, Join it today, it's worth the subs it will cost you and they will fight all the anomalies contained in your contract of employment too...
Because you now have a work History with this firm, make certain you get everything you need to keep you safe at your job, like Protective clothing Boots and Gloves, and decent sufficient tea breaks and a lunch-hour too. and remember this:- Only do the work you are employed to do, nobody elses as you may not be trained up for their jobs as well as your own, Check with the Dept. of Employment for all further information, it will serve you well, should your employer become a bit overbearing on you to do more Hours and less rest... Good Luck Chris and stay safe...Tony M
