I would like some advice relating to running my own business, please?
So, I have a job that pays just enough to pay my bills but doesn't give me any wiggle room at all. Several months ago I placed an ad on Craig's List advertising my sevices as an English tutor. I did a lot of tutoring when I was in college, and I always loved doing it, so this has been a pleasant and rewarding experience for me. The response to my ad has been excellent.

In fact, it's been so excellent that I'm getting way more work than I can handle while still holding down my regular full-time job. I've had to turn away several people because I already have more students than I probably should. I am working all the time.

Tutoring kids has opened a lot of doors for me. For instance, one of my student's parents hired me to do writing and editing work for his company's monthly newsletter. College students often hire me to help them edit and re-write papers. And I'm doing some work on another student's parent's company website.

I feel like this is the first time in my life that I've had such opportunities coming my way. I really don't want to ignore what could be a chance to finally take control of my future and perhaps stop working for the man.

Is there any way I could take this and turn it into an actual business? I need advice.

Thanks.

Crap--sorry about the typo up there. Haha, isn't that ironic? It should read, obviously, "services" instead of "sevices".

Yes, if you have too many customers, think about adding some good workers to your staff and sending them in your place. You could make a percentage of whatever they collect. Its obvious there is a marketing for such a service and you could start your own business.

Considering the economy we are in, your experience should indicate the potential for growth when we emerge from the recession and people have more discretionary income.

I would certainly spend the next 6 months doing two things: First, start saving as much money as you can. This is you rainy day fund to carry you over if business should fall off. Next, start contacting state agencies, SBA and SCORE to get guidance on what you need to open a business and how to ensure success. Read as much as you can (there is a wealth of info on the SBA home page). Meanwhile, start collecting references and recommendations from your current clients. Network with as many others as you can. Learn about marketing.

At the end of 6 to 9 months, you hopefully have an adequate rainy day fund and you will be prepared to embark on this endeavor.

I would, absolutely! That is how my brother and I started our landscaping business - we started small, and it snowballed. Good luck. I know that you will be a success. Even if you do need a spell check now and then. lol

Hell yeah, I'm trying to put together an online tutoring service down here in Fairfield, because of the problem I have going to stranger's houses. I looked over my front page of my website and I misspelled grammar. LOL! I'm still building the site so I haven't had any bites yet, but we should talk....hey wait, we are...I'm going back to emailing you...

Ya know, Steve said what I was going to say...

Im really proud of you! And, I think it is a great idea - but I also worry about this economy. I think it would be wise to work and save up at least 6 months worth of money that would cover all expenses for that length of time, prior to jumping ship and working for yourself. Whatever you do - dont ignore those opportunities! Take control!! Just be smart about it, consider the economy and go from there.

One thing is certain - in bad economies, many people often return to school to gain more skills... So maybe the economy might HELP you in that case?

Leverage: educate/train, hire/employ, supervise/manage people. Set up a small to modest-sized service business along this line. And don't forget to "shout" that you're there -- and you means business.

Well, we definitely want you to have "wiggle room".<wink> I'm just afraid this may indicate ambition. Gasp!

Have you thought of hiring other tutors as employees? You would need to file a Doing Business As (DAB) with the city, get your Employer Identification Number from the IRS, and later look into what corporate structure you will eventually want (LC would probably work). You will also need at least good accounting software, and someone you trust if you need legal advise.

Next, you want to track the income per hour from the work you're tutoring now, and use that to compare with similar businesses in your area for your business plan. You'll also need a marketing plan and a clear vision of how you want to grow and in what time frame. Whatever bank you get your business account through can usually help you with proforma numbers.

I run my own business, and would be happy to help if I can. Good luck.
