You say you have done a course on Self Assessment - where was this from? If you have not already contacted your local Inland Recenue/HM Revenue & Customs office do so to register, as there are penalties for not disclosing your new business when you start it.

HMRC also offer a Business Support Team who run free courses in all aspects of self employment, from basic record keeping to running PAYE schemes. You can also make an appointment to visit an Enquiry Centre and talk to advisors who have a wealth of leaflets and advice for people starting up in self employment. There's a telephone helpline for the newly self employed who can give similar advice. Also check out HMRC's website, there's loads of information on there.

And lastly - keep notes all monies spent out and earned - whether it be in a fancy computerised spreadsheet or a manual diary, write down what money you have spent and on what. When you come to fill in your tax return at the end of your first trading year, you will need to show your expenses incurred during the year, and if you have earned over ÂŁ15,000 you will need to break them down into various categories eg motor and travel expenses, general admin, rent and rates etc. On the self employed pages of the HMRC website,

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/

there is a link to downloading the SA103 - Self Employed pages for this years tax return - have a look at the different headings you should be using to break down your expenses.

Don't over-organise and take too much advice from others about how they do things, everyone works in their own way and every business is different.

Just make sure you keep absolutely everything and know where it is initially, that way when you change/develop you methods of working you can go back to your source material and get everything as you want it. Log everything in such a way that if someone says - "where is X" you can always find it. Always keep your income and expenditure up to date - at least weekly, this is the thing to really keep an eye on.

Get a good accountant and find out if there are any business groups(e.g. regional development agencies) in your area that can give you free advice when you need it.

You sound like youve got ya head screwed on so i wont insult your intelligence by explaining the basics but the one thing you may find helpful is as simple as a note pad, to jot things down, an address book to keep up to date with your contacts and a fax machine.
Get yourself an accountant too= they will keep them at bay and take the headache of it away from you.

Those are very important. Also with regard to sewlf employment I think you have to contact the Inland Revenue and fill out some forms. If you live in Council Accomodation they will need to know what you are doing if you are working from home. Get yourself an organiser and keep a track of everythign to do- who you spoke to then not only have you a mental note but you have it written down.

Do you have a spare room where you can set this all up? And do you have the right software package to get you started?

Get "Small business for dummies", it shows you how to do everything starting from simple setting up do bookkeeping and all the boring details! trust me, it's very helpful.

Recognise self employed is much harder work than employed! Longer hours (thinking about it all waking hours) and harder work!

No easy way as every business is different. Don't waste money on special (expensive) record keeping plans.

Sounds as if you have never worked in an office which would have shown you it is all really quite easy. Best way is to find a friend who is self employed and get them to show you what they do, it's not rocket science!

Don't waste money on fancy things initially. Get to see as the work progresses, what you actually need rather than something that is sold as essential (so they can make money from you!) but in reality is a waste of money!

Keep all receipts for income/expenditure. you don't need to buy a computer programme, a simple ruled schoolbook with "ins" at one end and "outs" at the other is adequate initially! As you are starting at the beginning of the financial year you do not need to worry about "the books" until much later on in the year.

Put money by for the inevitable rainy day!
Rule of thumb is you cannot afford to spend any of the profit made for 2 years as you need it to build your business.

Main priority is to sell your service! If you aren't working you aren't earning!

Sorry it's a bit broad, but advice needs to be tailored to match exactly what you are doing.

muddling through will cost you time and money.make sure you are well organised beforehand.keep books on your incoming and out goings .a book keeping course would be usefull.good luck in your new venture.

get yourself a single entry cashbook (monthly entries). Simple to keep up to date everyday. Have a folder for all receipts and use a huge 'safety pin' for receupts add ing to them eceryday with a seperate pin for each month.
At the end of hte tax year most of your work will be done already.
ps
if you are in the uk I hope you have recognised qualifications in counselling e.g. counselling degree or similar.

You need to be very disciplined and organised. Never put things away till tomorrow. You need to have a do it NOW attitide. First is to zoom-in on what you're good at and offer your services. You will also need to identify who your clients would be and how to advertise what you have to offer. I suggest you use flyers instead of expensive advertising media. Create the following spreedsheets:

1) Investment Capital
2) Expenses
3) Incoming Revenues
4) Clients' database

These are but the basics. Once the business starts rolling-in, do what is deemed necessary. On an average, it is not unreasonable to expect business to roll-in six months after you've "advertised" so you'll need to be patient and never give up.

First of all, you MUST either sock away a lot of money or establish absolutely certain financing. You should anticipate patches where there's not enough coming in to cover your nut. (The nut is the combination of your fixed expenses and your variable, unavoidable expenses.)
During those times, you or the banks are going to have to pony up.
Are you a psychologist? Sounds like? You may want to check out professional organizations for advice.
Also, many folks have found SCORE (the Service Corps of Retired Executives) to be helpful. They do exactly what you are asking about here. They help you set up a business and point out the things you may not have thought about, or don't know how to do.

Any business expenses you incur will be tax deductible. I would suggest you hire an organization consultant to help with your record keeping and setup. Their fees will pay for themselves. You can also consider taking a class at a local community college, again, as a business expense.
