You could open a shop but that could be high cost.
Have you thought about offering the service TO other shops. Contact your gift shop, art shop, florists, choc shop etc and see if they would like to offer that service - you can collect and deliver. Minimal outlay until you get the clientale to justify a shop. As an artist you can create some nice looking poster or mock-ups and use these as displays for these outlets. |

It is best to find out first if you are required to have a business license which don't cost very much. Most people first start out at home but can also go into a shared business like in a book store or coffee shop. By all means ADVERTISE your services. Foe example, by telling friends,relatives,using fliers and newspaper ads. You can also advertise in the school newspaper which doesn't cost hardly anything and most student don't have the time or talent you do have. |

Id take photos of items that you have wrapped, and make a portfolio. Take examples, put wrapping paper into binders to give people choices, clear sleeves with ribbon samples, card choices, and any add ons; toys for baby gifts, girly accents for female gifts. use your imagination.
Print fliers with your photos and put yourself out in the open at networking, business and home and garden shows. It will be worth it. maybe wrap small favors to hand out, have a mailing list with email and mail addresses to send out postcards to keep in touch with potential clients.
Even start a myspace page with your business . It never hurts. haha.

Generally it is adviceble to start small, with a small rented shop or better still from your home. Be as crative as possbile with banners, brochures and ads like in the internet, email, sms or local radios. Just spread the word to your neighbours and colleques. Start with your office and home. Have many categories like Childrens special, adults, and also dont forget to have premium services for profesionals and businesses. Its always great if you can have a few samples photographed and put in the internet, local ads and such.

plan plan plan. have a backup to everything. you should prob try taking a small business class at a community college or read up in business books. they have formulas on how to find a base price, amt of people needed, etc. get your finances handled by opening up a business acct with a bank. know when and where to advertise!!!! large companies spend about 1/3 the price of their product on advertising. that 99c can of campbells u bought,about 33c went to ads. so plan out where your target market is(intended customers) and see where theyll most likely see your ads(on back of supermarket receipts, newspaper, door to door, cars, etc. this is just the tip of the iceberg. but good luck. |

i had thought about this idea before but generally they open a stand to do it in malls and stuff around seasonal times... i dont know how big business would be all year round.... i like shops in europe because they generally all offer this service free of charge. |

First, you may want to see if there is even a want or need for this service. You should start from your home. If you are serious about starting a business, you need to get a DBA to protect your business name. Usually this is pretty cheap. This can be done at a courthouse or city hall, depends on where you live. A call to the county clerk would give you the answer. Then, if you are doing it from home, you can deduct certain items as business expenses. But, to do this, you will have to file a special tax form that goes along with your personal taxes. Anyway, like I said, first, you need to determine if there is even a need for this business. Personally, if you are creative and artsy, expand your horizons a bit further, because many shops will giftwrap for free, and also with the economy, many people will not pay for something extra that they can do themselves. |

As the other answers said, do up a presentation folder of what you can, do a BUSINESS PLAN, then set a time table and stick to it.
Maybe you need to start small and seasonal. Go to the largest group of shops in your area - CANVESS the need for your service and come to a WIN/Win situation with the retailers - do not try to cut in to other business. Build your businesss by helping them and they will help you in return. |
