First learn your business, spend some time working as a cleaner. |

go and work for one to see if that's what you really want to do and then you'll need to take a business course on starting your own business, so you'll know what to do behind the scenes- taxes, business licenses, insurance, etc |

Unfortunately people like me have spent thirty years perfecting this - and yes we charge for our services. Just a few pointers for free though: Don't clean houses. That's not a business its an income and if its an income you want you may as well work for someone else. You will never make enough money from the profit in cleaning. The real money is to be made from the value of your business - so don't bother with one off carpet cleaning jobs either. You need commercial contracts in writing.
As I said earlier, I DO charge but there are still a few usefull tips on my website that we don't charge for.
Good luck
Karl

Don't pay anyone any money. There are plenty of bulletin boards you can join and learn the job from the real professionals. I know of a few, but I'm sure there are many more. www.cleanpeers.com, and www.cleaningtalk.com.
There is alot of information for newbies to the industry. You will have to register and create a profile, but it is all free of charge. Use the search function to find previous discussions about the topics you are interested in. Learn as much as you can, the information is there for the reading, you just need to look for it.
The one thing you won't find is anyone to tell you what to charge. The reason is that pricing is a highly localized and volatile topic. What works in Philadelphia, probably won't work in Apache Junction, Arizona. Pricing is something you need to figure out on your own by knowing what your costs are and developing a plan to recover those costs along with a reasonable profit for the company. Only you will know what your costs are, and therefore only you can set your price. Once you set your price, sell your service based on quality and peace of mind that your service is the best around.
One word of caution: Do not try to be the cheapest in town!!!!! You will get a reputation as being cheap labor and you will only get the jobs where price is the biggest concern. These jobs are typically with problematic clients that will try to find reasons not to pay you or will fire you as soon as someone cheaper comes along. You don't need those problems, especially as a new company.
As far as opening a business. I assume you are in the US. Call your Secretary of States office and ask questions about the type of business you are looking to form. LLC, Sole Proprietor, S-Corp, Corp, etc. Ask what forms you need to file. Ask if you need any type of business licence to operate in your state. For example, I run a powerwashing company. We are not required to have any state licenses at all. BUT. One of the sevices I offer is Deck Restoration, which could require me to replace a deck board or two on occassion. Because of that, I am required to be a registered Home Improvement Contractor. So sometimes the requirements are not exactly clear, so asl alot of questions. Make sure to call your Town Hall as well. Even though I operate out of my house, the local building inspector had to conduct an inspection of the premises before I could legally open for business.
Good Luck!!! |

all you have to do is go to your local court house and get a dba with your business name, get brochures, business cards with your business name, your name and a contact number and leave them in your chamber office, doctors offices, salon, things of that nature, run newspaper ads, and set your amount of the home or commerical sizes, a great place to get really good business cards is www.vistaprint.com you can get 250 business cards for free and just pay the shipping I think it is 7.00 or 8.00 to ship it to you, why go under a franchise name and give them your hard earn money that you have done to clean homes and business, you can do it on your own and once you expand where you can't keep up with all the business then hire a person or two, you can do this. |
